Celebrate the United States Constitution!

To mark this year’s Constitution Day (Tuesday, September 17th), the Library has compiled a guide of resources, including primary source documents, to provide the College community with information about one of America’s most important documents.

Established by Congress in 2004, Constitution Day recognizes the ratification of the U.S. constitution on September 17, 1787.  The law, introduced by Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, requires all educational institutions receiving federal funds provide information and instruction about the Constitution on September 17th each year.

Visit library.kzoo.edu to find our Constitution Day guide and learn more!

A.M. Todd Rare Book Room
Winter 2024 Exhibit

The A.M. Todd Rare Book Room proudly announces the opening of its Black History Month exhibit, “Black Stories – Black Voices – Black History,” running from February 2nd to March 3rd, 2024, Monday – Friday from 1:30 p.m. – 5 p.m.

This captivating showcase delves into the rich literary contributions of Black authors, featuring a curated selection from the Rare Book Room collection. Among the remarkable works on display are rare first edition prints of Maya Angelou’s On the Pulse of Morning, Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Poems of Cabin and Field, Joseph T Wilson’s The Black Phalanx, and William A. Sinclair’s The Aftermath of Slavery, as well as autographed first editions of James Baldwin’s Go Tell It on the Mountain and Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon. A limited edition reprint of Jean Toomer’s Cane is on display, as well as the first edition print of The Cush*te by Rufus Perry, the first Black student enrolled at Kalamazoo College.

Spanning from 1888 to 2000, these influential texts offer a profound exploration of the African American experience, making this exhibit a compelling journey through the diverse voices that have shaped the landscape of Black literature.

Students in the Fall 2023 Design Fundamentals course, taught by Nayda Collazo-Llorens, collaborated with the Center for Civic Engagement at Kalamazoo College and Farmworker Legal Services (FLS) to design the posters in this exhibition.

Students worked in small groups to research and produce their designs, each focusing on a particular message or strategy:
• promote FLS’ services to a general audience
• share information with farmworkers in Michigan
• call attention to issues affecting immigrant, migrant, and seasonal farmworkers

Please join us at the Kalamazoo College Library for the opening reception on February 6th from 3:30pm-5pm! Can't make the reception? The poster exhibition will be on display all Winter Term!

Saturday, October 7, will mark Let Freedom Read Day, the first Banned Books Week day of action. From calling decision-makers to checking out or buying banned books, to writing letters and more, everyone is encouraged to do at least one thing to defend the right to read and to speak on behalf of those who ensure access to information.

What one thing can you do to defend the right to read?

Let Freedom Read Day The freedom to read is under attack — let’s do something about it! On October 7, 2023, we’re asking everyone to take at least one action to help defend books from censorship and to stand up for the library staff, educators, writers, publishers, and booksellers who make the...

October 1-7 is Banned Books Week. The American Library Association documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago. The unparalleled number of reported book challenges in 2022 nearly doubles the 729 book challenges reported in 2021. Of the record 2,571 unique titles targeted for censorship, these are most challenged, including reasons cited for censoring the books.
