The Center for New Media offers both traditional 16-week college classes and short, intensive classes in animation, creative and technical writing, digital photography, e-commerce, graphic design, programming, and web/multimedia design and development for both the traditional college student and the professional graphic designer or web developer. We’ve built a reputation growing the Graphic Commun

ications department from primarily classes teaching layout and graphic design for print-based production. Reacting to the demand for skills needed to get jobs designing and developing web sites we’ve partnered with other departments at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

The event, held in observance of Black History Month, will highlight the works of local Black artists, and provide a shared connection to the rich Black cultural heritage in the Kalamazoo area. We are now accepting submissions for our annual Black Artists Exhibit, opening on February 7th. This exhibit is in collaboration with the Black Arts & Cultural Center, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, and the Metropolitan Kalamazoo branch of the NAACP. The exhibit will remain on display for the month of February.

Congratulations to the winners of our 3rd Annual High School Art & Design Competition. We had a total of 54 pieces entered this year in a variety of mediums, including but not limited to, painting, digital illustration, collage, animation, and even sewing. We are continuously impressed year by year with the talents of these junior and senior High School students. Thank you for your participation in this year's show!

Come see these pieces and more in-person at the Center for New Media Arcus Gallery and South Gallery. The exhibit will remain on display throughout December and January. The Arcus gallery is open to the public Tuesday-Friday, noon-2 PM. Appointments outside of the regular gallery hours can be scheduled with Cindy Parks at [email protected].

The winners include:

· Best of Show “Remnant” by Grace Totten from Kalamazoo Central High School, two semesters of tuition for the Studio Arts for Transfer program or any of the Applied Arts and Media Technology programs at KVCC

· Director's Choice $250, "Don't Lick That" by Jada Shaw from Education for the Arts

· 1st place $300, "One Track Mind, One Track Heart" by Pinmanee Eiamtamai from Portage Northern High School

· 2nd Place $200, “Beyond the Void” by Zach Gruszczyk from Watervliet High School

· 3rd Place $100, “Grandma” by Elizabeth Bierlein from Loy Norrix High School

Honorable mention awards of $50 each went to:
· "Observation of Fleeting Moments" by Sophia Solberg from Education for the Arts

· "The Body Remembers, Even When the Mind Doesn't" by Jaida Hertlein from Centerville High School

· "Graffiti" by Erika Bengelink from Compass High School

Come on out to see over 50 pieces of work created by Southwest Michigan junior and senior high school students, ranging from acrylic paintings and digital design, to photography and collage. You are not going to want to miss this!

The deadline for our annual High School Art and Design Competition is tomorrow!

Kalamazoo Valley Community College's Third Annual Kalamazoo Valley Community College High School Art and Design Competition Exhibit is open to all junior and senior high school students throughout the greater Kalamazoo area. The exhibit will open at the Arcus Gallery and Center for New Media in downtown Kalamazoo on Dec. 6, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. during Art Hop and entries are being accepted until Nov. 27.

The contest and related exhibit will be on display during the months of December and January in the Arcus and Center for New Media gallery spaces and open on the evening of Art Hop. Awards will be given for Best of Show, first, second and third places.

MRC artWorks – a program of MRC Industries, Inc. – is a professional working art studio and retail gallery located at 330 S. Kalamazoo Mall in downtown Kalamazoo. The studio offers unique and affordable art created by individuals with disabilities.
The work also provides an outlet for artists to explore creative self-expression while developing personal growth, dignity and confidence. All artists receive a commission from the sale of their work, which not only serves as their source of income, but also enhances and reinforces their self-esteem.

The November exhibit at the Center for New Media in downtown Kalamazoo will feature, “Nature’s Impressions: Land, Life and Abstraction,” by MRC artWorks. The show opens during Art Hop on Nov. 1 from 5:30 – 8 p.m. and will be on display in the Arcus Gallery for the remainder of the month.

Tonight is the night! Join us from 5:30-6:30 PM to view a collection of artwork created by late Kalamazoo historian, Murphy Darden. The exhibit focuses on local and national Black history, highlighting the important contributions of African Americans to the history of Kalamazoo.

Following the reception, check out the Kalamazoo Valley Museum's Exhibit "Collecting Black History: Murphy Darden’s Legacy", to view the vast collection of artifacts Darden had collected in his lifetime. A documentary about his legacy will be shown at 7 PM. Admission to both the Arcus Gallery and the Museum is free.
