KU Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Science, & Athletic Training Our mission is to achieve excellence and leadership in education, research, & healthcare through collaborative, innovative, & evidence-based approach.

A unit of the School of Health Professions, the KU Department of Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Science, and Athletic Training is located on the University of Kansas Medical Center campus in Kansas City, Kansas. In collaboration with The University of Kansas Hospital adjacent to KUMC, students benefit from the opportunity to interact with a large number of health care professionals and leading researchers in real-world environments. 💙❤️ Celebrating Excellence, Inspiration, and the Next Generation of Rehabilitation Professionals!

Our PTRSAT Department was honored to celebrate the 2026 Jessie Ball Lecture and Pinning Ceremony, recognizing our first-year Rehabilitation Science PhD, PT Class of 2029, and Athletic Training Class of 2028 students!

🌟 We were privileged to welcome James McGinnis, who shared his powerful and inspirational journey following a traumatic brain injury sustained while playing football. His story of resilience, perseverance, and recovery reminded us of the profound impact rehabilitation professionals can have on the lives of others.

We were also especially grateful to have Emily Harmon, ATC, the athletic trainer who was on the scene when James sustained his injury, join us for this meaningful occasion. Their presence offered a powerful reminder of the importance of compassionate care, teamwork, and the lasting connections formed throughout the rehabilitation journey.

🏆 Congratulations to our outstanding student award recipients! Their achievements reflect the dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence that define our future rehabilitation professionals.

What a busy week for the PT Class of 2028 in both pathways! Our hybrid students wrapped up their lab immersion with putting their neurological examination skills they learned at home into practice through case based application! Our on-campus students had a guest lecture with Dr. Becky Bliss on basal ganglia disorders and measurement of balance through administering functional outcome measures and clincial decision making on what measure would show meaningful change across diagnoses! We are so proud of our student's ability to jump in and apply information immediately and their dedication to learning to practice at the top of their scope! ☀️

💙❤️ Hybrid Pathway Immersion Week is in Full Swing! 💙❤️

Our KUMC 2nd-year PT Hybrid Pathway students are back on campus this week for another exciting lab immersion! 🙌

The time started with a fall formal for the Class of 2028 (both Hybrid and On-campus pathways came together to celebrate) And Ortho II ended with a deep dive into pelvic rehabilitation with Dr. Bartley! 🧠💪

Next up ➡️ A full day dedicated to neurological examination techniques and clinical reasoning, where students will continue building the skills and confidence needed to translate classroom knowledge into clinical practice!

We are excited to recognize Allison Pribyl, PT, a valued clinical instructor for the KUMC Physical Therapy Program at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis! 👏

Allison is currently mentoring Ellie Wehrmann, a Class of 2027 PT student, as she completes her full-time clinical experience in the acute care setting! 🏥

Clinical instructors play an essential role in bridging the gap between classroom learning and clinical practice, helping our students develop clinical reasoning, confidence, and the skills needed to provide exceptional patient care.

Our 2nd-year on-campus pathway PT students are diving into the fascinating world of the motor system and neuroplasticity in their PTRS Neurological Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation I course!

Through interactive learning and application of neuroscience concepts, students are exploring how the nervous system controls movement, adapts to challenges, and reorganizes through experience and practice. 💪🧠

Understanding the science behind motor control, motor learning, and neuroplasticity is essential for developing effective, evidence-based rehabilitation interventions that promote recovery and maximize function for individuals with neurological conditions.

Olivia Gwinner, a 3rd-year PT student in the Class of 2027, recently had the opportunity to translate knowledge and intervention strategies for the ocular system following concussion, learned during her PT lab experiences, directly into her clinical setting!

Ever wonder how hands on psychomotor skills work in a Hybrid PT Program?

By deep diving into concepts to understand the skills and demonstrating innovative solutions! Our 1st Year Hybrid students are learning acute care mobilization techniques by using household items to mimic the skills so they are ready to jump in next week during their Lab Immersion with case studies and simulations! This includes line and tube management.

🌟 Learning in the classroom. Growing in the clinic.

Hybrid Pathway student Ashten Scheppers-Barr recently completed her 6-week InClinE I rotation at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska!

Reflecting on her experience, Ashten shared:

“Over the past six weeks, I’ve been introduced to a whole new world of physical therapy. Having never worked in an inpatient facility, I gained valuable experience working with the patient populations at Madonna and seeing innovative technology used to help individuals work toward greater independence.

One of my biggest takeaways was seeing how individuals with similar diagnoses can have very different tolerance levels and needs. It was exciting to apply the skills I’ve learned throughout the semester to real patient care.

I’m so excited for InClinE II and the opportunity to work with individuals through telehealth while building on everything I learned from this experience!”

InClinE, or Integrated Clinical Experiences, gives our PT students the opportunity to spend a half-day each week learning in the clinic. These experiences allow students to intentionally connect classroom and lab-based learning with hands-on patient care throughout the curriculum.

👟 Learning movement by doing!

Our Class of 2029 PT students are putting movement science into action as they develop hands-on skills in fall recovery, gait assessment, and pelvic motion across both our in-person and virtual learning environments.

Our faculty do an amazing job moving beyond simply teaching how to perform a skill. Through engaging, interactive, and fun learning activities, students build a deeper understanding of the why behind movement—helping them connect foundational concepts to clinical decision-making and patient care.

Whether learning together in the lab or connecting virtually, our students are developing the knowledge, skills, and clinical reasoning they'll need to confidently apply these principles in practice. 💪🧠
