Bloch students DJ Jackson Jr., Josh Kori and Cameron Love started the fall semester together, just as they have for years. The trio has played basketball side by side since childhood and won the 2024 UAA 16U National Championship. They chose UMKC for both academics and athletics, joining the Bloch School and Mark Turgeon’s roster while keeping their roots in Kansas City.

We're celebrating four decades of entrepreneurial excellence at the 40th Annual Entrepreneur of the Year Awards on Dec. 2!

Since its inaugural celebration in 1985, the awards have honored the visionaries behind Kansas City’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and a legacy rooted in the vision of Henry Bloch, whose belief in UMKC’s potential helped transform the Bloch School into a nationally recognized home for entrepreneurship.

This year's honorees include The Sunderland Family represented by Kent Sunderland, founders of the Sunderland Foundation; Fred Coulson, founder and CEO of Five Elms Capital; Joe and Judy Roetheli, founders of Greenies, Pets Best Life and The Lil’ Red Foundation; and a Student Entrepreneur of the Year who will be named soon.

The awards program will include a panel discussion on "The Future of Entrepreneurship in Kansas City," with past honorees such as Michael Brown, CEO and president of Euronet; Nathaniel Hagedorn, founder and CEO of NorthPoint Development; and Maria Meyers, retired UMKC Vice Chancellor of Commercialization and Entrepreneurship.

What happens when you combine the arts and entrepreneurship? Students receive the tools to transform their creativity into opportunity.

As an UMKC Conservatory alum, nonprofit founder and educator, Jena Vangjel bridges the arts and entrepreneurship through her teaching and mentorship. She teaches courses in both the Conservatory and Bloch School, helping students develop the skills to navigate today's creative economy while building sustainable careers on their own terms.

Drawing on her experience as an artist, entrepreneur and community leader, Vangjel prepares the next generation of artists and demonstrates how creative and entrepreneurial thinking can work hand in hand.

Local high school students got a behind-the-scenes look at the banking industry during a visit to nbkc bank, hosted by Bloch and Banking Leaders of Tomorrow!

Students learned practical budgeting tips from UMKC’s Financial Wellness Center, explored the importance of building a relationship with a bank and connected with NBKC employees to learn about their roles and career paths.

The Kansas City Business Journal named 20 people to know in accounting, including our Interim Dean Leigh Salzsieder!

Salzsieder is a UMKC Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Leadership winner and his leadership extends to service on the University Budget Committee, past chair of the UM System Missouri Online Faculty Advisory Committee and as a past national faculty liaison for the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. Congratulations to Salzsieder on this well‑deserved recognition!

Meet Nam Phan, a student competing on American Ninja Warrior, while balancing data analytics, accounting and everything else that comes with college! 🥷

For Nam, the college routine includes a few extra obstacles. He often fits in five training sessions a week at 1 a.m. to prepare for competition.

You can catch Nam on American Ninja Warrior Season 18, Episodes 7, 9 and 10, representing the Central Region. And he's not done yet. He'll be back on Season 19 next summer!

The UMKC Community Entrepreneurship Program is back, and our second cohort is off to a great start! We’re excited to welcome nearly 40 early-stage entrepreneurs who are currently taking part in Entrepreneur Bootcamp and will progress through the program’s Mentor Program and Bloch Consulting Lab Experience, gaining the knowledge and resources they need to take their ventures to the next level.
