Avila University Graduate School of Psychology Avila University is a private university in Kansas City, Missouri. The MS in Psychology degree program has two tracks: research and general.

From faculty to staff, as well as other students, Avila is a community of learners that values your individuality. The Master of Science in Counseling Psychology is a 60-credit hours degree program designed to provide specialized education in the field of counseling psychology. The program is designed to help graduates meet the educational criteria required for licensed mental health counselors in

Kansas and Missouri. The Avila Psychology department is committed to the scientist-practitioner model to train masters level counseling psychologists for the delivery of mental health services in a variety of settings, such as private practice, mental health clinics, counseling centers, and human service agencies. Students who earn a masters degree in counseling psychology will be able to assist persons experiencing social, behavioral, and personal mental health problems through a variety of approaches and learned techniques. The Master of Science in Psychology is a 36-credit degree program that provides students with a solid foundation in psychology. The degree program offers students an in-depth survey of the diverse research, theory, and practices of psychology’s many sub-disciplines. The program is designed for students preparing to apply for doctoral programs and for students interested in working in non-clinical settings. Both degree programs require a set of core courses that cover foundation components of psychology and statistical research design. The research track utilizes additional coursework with hands-on research to prepare students planning for advanced study in psychology. Both tracks are available to those students who are interested continuing their education in psychology in a non-clinical path.

Congratulations to two graduate MSP students, Taylor Staves and Izzy Watters, for receiving Psi Chi Graduate Research grants to fund their thesis work!

Taylor received $500 to fund her project, “The Influence of Benevolent Sexism on Performance, Job Selection, and Perception of Competence.” Her faculty mentor is Dr. Jordan Wagge.

Izzy received $1000 to fund her project, ““Loneliness and the Stress Response: Investigating Physiological Reactivity in the Socially Isolated and the Socially Connected.” Her faculty mentor is Dr. Marcia Pasqualini.

Its going to be a beautiful day for the School of Psychology fall picnic tomorrow (Saturday September 23) at Minor Park shelter house from 2-4 pm.

All are welcome -- faculty, staff, students, alum, former instructions, family members, and leashed dogs

Please bring some snacks and/or drinks to share (if you cannot, there will probably be enough!) and any outdoor games you want to play (beanbag toss, frisbee, etc.). We'll supply hotdogs, plates, cups, and paper towels. There are portable restrooms nearby the shelter, and a playground!
