University of Missouri-Kansas City APhA-ASP Chapter American Pharmacist Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) at UMKC, making a difference in the community

Our chapter is very active in several national and local patient care projects:

* Falls Prevention – A collaborative and interprofessional effort to screen and educate individuals to reduce the risk of falls and fall-related injuries.

* GenerationRx – Educational program that increases public awareness of prescription medication abuse and encourages everyone to actively work to prevent abuse and

unsafe medication disposal.

* Operation Self-Care – Student pharmacists help improve the quality of life of individuals suffering from heartburn by presenting information on heartburn and providing consultation. Additionally, osteoporosis screenings and other self-care topics have been added to this initiative.

* Operation Diabetes – Student pharmacists conduct blood glucose screenings and increase awareness of diabetes and the dangers associated with the disease.

* Operation Immunization – Student pharmacists increase community immunization rates and education on the importance of vaccinations, while increasing the public’s awareness of the services and resources pharmacists and student pharmacists can provide.

* Operation Heart – Student pharmacists encourage lifestyle modifications, monitor associated risk factors, and provide education about medications for heart disease.

* Project Medicare – Program unique to the MU campus that assists seniors in identifying the most cost-effective Medicare Part D plans to meet their needs.

* ROOt for Health – Program unique to the KC campus that reaches out to local elementary schools to teach the importance of a healthy diet and plenty of exercise in order to live a healthier life.

* Support Our Troops – Student pharmacists on the Columbia campus raise funds with class competitions to send cards and care packages to our troops overseas.

Over the weekend, students part of our APhA-ASP organization had the opportunity to volunteer at the Second Missionary Baptist Church health fair. We screened patients for their blood glucose and blood pressures. Additionally, students were able to educate others on topics like reproductive health, immunizations, and OTC medication safety. Students are looking forward to coming back next year to continue giving back to our KC community!

UMKC APhA-ASP members recently participated in the Missouri Pharmacy Association Legislative Day in Jefferson City, MO. Students were paired with a pharmacist mentor and were able to talk with legislators about the current Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) transparency legislation (SB45 and HB982). Our chapter had more than 50 members represent UMKC at the APhA Annual Conference this past weekend in Nashville, TN. It was an amazing opportunity to connect with other schools, share ideas, and plan for the upcoming year. Members were able to attend sessions that provided education on event planning, professional development, and clinical education. Our policy vice president, Jeremy Schmidt, represented our chapter in the APhA-ASP House of Delegates. We wrapped the weekend up with our annual Dean’s Dinner. A huge thank you to Dean Melchert for sponsoring this dinner!
