Alfonso Jones is a sweet teenage musician, killed by an off duty cop.
We learn their stories & their names. We watch Alfonso’s family deal with the grief & the fight for justice.
It shows the REAL impact that systemic discrimination has: survival is hard, but success is even harder.
I Am Alfonso Jones doesn't just capture the horrors of our present-day racial tensions, of the violence that has spawn Black Lives Matter. It's also a history lesson as Alfonso meets victims of police violence dating back well over a century. Talking to children about racial violence in this country feels like an impossible task, but this book is a good place to start.
A quick, although heavy read. The characters are quirky & real. Perfect for people who like history, YA, graphic novels, & want to learn more about the realities of racial discrimination.
