Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are being seen with a sharper lens by admissions officers today.

Simply collecting certificates online isn't enough. MOOCs, however, can be a powerful tool for demonstrating your academic curiosity and readiness to handle university rigor, especially for niche subjects that your high school does not offer.

It's important to remember that most MOOCs don't offer college credit, so you must check each university's specific policies.

Unlike strict academic papers, college essays give you room to be creative.
Here is how to use verb tenses to keep the admissions officer hooked:

If you use present tense to describe past events, you bring the reader directly into the moment with you (e.g., "I shake as I step onto the stage...").

When reflecting back on lessons learned and personal growth, use the traditional past tense.

When in doubt, default to the correct grammatical tense for the timeframe, but don't be afraid to shift to the present tense to heighten emotional scenes.

One of the biggest mistakes students make on their "Why This School?" essays is writing generic praise that can be applied to any school.

There are thousands of essays submitted to colleges every year. To stand out in just one or two paragraphs, your essay should include the following: Mention distinctive professors, specific labs, campus programs, or niche student organizations.

It should also detail exactly how those specific resources align with your goals AND what value you bring to their campus community.

Remember: If you can swap the college's name for another school's name and the essay still makes sense, delete it and start over!

Save this post for when you start working on your supplemental essays!

Want to build a strong resume before even graduating high school?

Students in Grades 11 and 12 can earn high school credits through Cooperative Education (Co-op), which allows them to gain real-world experience in the workplace.

Co-op programs allow you to explore career paths before choosing a major, build practical skills that traditional classrooms don't teach, and stand out on college applications and future resumes.

Interested in launching your career path early? Discuss co-op with your guidance counselor!

It depends entirely on where you’re applying.

While the national average hovers around 19, here is how target score ranges generally break down:

19–23: Meets admissions requirements for many standard state and regional colleges.
27–31: Competitive for selective universities.
33–36: Preferred for Ivy League and top-tier institutions.

Don't aim blindly! Look up the 25th–75th percentile ACT range of your target schools, set the top half of that range as your benchmark, and build your study plan around it.

And remember, the next ACT test date is September 19, 2026. Now is the time to start prepping.

Sometimes more doesn't mean better. Especially when it comes to your college list.

To create a list of schools you are actually excited about attending, you should aim for a balance of safety, target, and reach schools.

Panic-applying doesn't make you feel more prepared; it just spreads your time, energy, and application budget thin. A bloated college list is usually a response to fear, not a strategy.

Feeling overwhelmed about where to start? As part of our program, we work with you to create a fully personalized college list tailored to your exact profile and preferences. Find out more about our program at www.inf4college.com.
