Compassion as a way of seeing

Compassion is not pity. It is not feeling sorry for someone. Compassion is the ability to see another person’s suffering and respond with kindness. It is the willingness to imagine what the world feels like from their perspective.

In dementia care, compassion means:
Understanding that confusion is frightening
Recognizing that repeated questions come from anxiety, not intention
Seeing agitation as communication, not misbehavior
Responding to fear with reassurance, not correction
Compassion shifts the focus from “How do I manage this behavior?” to “What is this person feeling, and how can I support them?”
