UMD’s Maryland Energy Extension (MEE) delivers unbiased and research-based programming Extension is the outreach component of US land grant universities.

Each state has one or more land grant universities, whose mission is to disseminate research-based information to the public. Dr. Drew Schiavone is the Energy Specialist for University of Maryland Extension, providing extension educational programs on energy conservation and clean energy technology to benefit Maryland residents, businesses and agricultural producers. FERC is reviewing PJM's proposal to procure up to 6,831 MW of added capacity for 2028–29.

PJM says the procurement is needed for projected load growth, while Md's ratepayer advocate estimates the plan could add up to $562M in state costs over 15 years.

The state’s ratepayer protection representative says the grid operator’s proposed reliability backstop could expose customers to as much as $562 million in long-term costs.

Projects focused on refrigerant-free elastocaloric cooling & energy-efficient data center heat management, featuring teachers from Prince George's & Montgomery counties.

From data centers to dehumidifiers, two local educators research cooling technologies with the help of UMD students.

Md regulators approved a $50.9M electric rate increase for Pepco, less than half of the utility's $119.9M request.

The PSC estimates the average residential customer will pay about $3.94 more per month, compared with the $10.24/month originally proposed.

Pepco customers in Maryland will see their electric bills go up, but by far less than the utility had requested after state regulators rejected its rate increase.

Maryland ranks 11th nationally with ~88 EV charging ports per 100k residents.

However, new analysis shows 45% of state ZIP codes still lack a public charging station, and another 25% have 4 or fewer ports.

Access to electric vehicle charging stations in Maryland has improved, but it's not spread evenly: An analysis of federal data shows that 45% of all Maryland ZIP codes don't have a public charging station and a quarter of those with stations have fewer than four ports.

MD approved a 20 yr agreement to buy 250 GWh of solar power annually from a planned 300 MW project on a reclaimed Garrett County coal mine.

The deal is projected to save $298M–$515M over 20 yrs & cover ~15% of state gov electricity needs starting in 2028.

MD conditionally awarded 5 new EV fast-charging projects in Baltimore, Charles, Frederick, Montgomery, & Prince George's counties

The $3.7M investment adds 24 fast-charging ports, bringing total state NEVI funding to $19.7M alongside 158k+ registered EVs

Maryland has conditionally awarded five new public electric vehicle fast-charging projects in Prince George’s, Frederick, Montgomery, Charles and Baltimore counties.

BGE has requested a $156 million rate increase, which the company says would raise typical customer bills by about $8 per month.

The filing would increase the utility's allowed return on equity from 9.5% to 10.4%.

A PSC decision is expected in early 2027.

A coalition of Maryland consumer advocates is asking regulators to turn down Baltimore Gas and Electric's newest rate increase bid after the utility reported $578 million in profit.

13 MD counties have enacted temporary moratoriums on new data center development, while Harford County has adopted a ban.

Only two counties are currently accepting new proposals as local governments evaluate energy, infrastructure, & zoning considerations.

Data centers have become a contested issue in recent years, and as local governments face more opposition to the facilities, many are hitting pause: 13 counties have enacted temporary data center moratoriums to study the issue, and one has imposed a ban.

Maryland regulators approved transmission upgrades needed before the state's last coal-fired power plant can retire.

The project includes ~37 miles of new or upgraded transmission lines, two new substations, and upgrades to three existing substations.
