Next week begins Open Access Week 2026, and we invite you to celebrate with us!

Open Access Week is an annual international event that celebrates the free and immediate online access to research, articles, books, and more worldwide. There’s a lot to celebrate, and this year we’re hosting several happenings and events around the libraries on campus to promote open access and its benefits.

Visit the ground floor of Sturgis Library from October 19-23 to view “Our Open Story,” a visual representation of how our Scholarly Publishing and Research team supports the Open Movements on campus.

We’re also hosting events to promote the benefits of open access research. Attend and help the university advance the open access movement, see the details below!

· In Conversation with Open Advocates: An Open Access Week Virtual Panel. Tuesday, October 20 at 11:00AM. Learn about the open access ecosystem at KSU! Registration link below.

· Digital Commons Drive-Thru. Tuesday, October 20 from 2:00PM-4:00PM in front of the Libraries on both campuses. Do you have a CV? Let our team review it and see if your works are eligible to share with the institutional repository! Bring a paper copy of your CV and any questions you have.

“Gender Q***r: A Memoir,” a graphic novel published in 2019, is one of the most challenged and banned books in public schools in the United States, according to PEN America, an organization that tracks book bans and challenges.

Author Maia Kobabe said, “I think if I had been able to find a book like Gender Q***r as a teenager, it would have meant the world to me. Because I was just so desperate to figure out who I was and to find the answers to the questions that I had.”

We want your feedback!

How can zines transform the classroom into a space for hands-on, personalized learning?

Join us Wednesday, October 14 at 2:00 PM for a “Teaching with Zines” webinar and discover the potential of zines as a teaching tool and opportunity for open pedagogy. Panelists will discuss their experiences using and creating zines in the classroom and ways DIY publishing can deepen student engagement.

Say hello, or สวัสดี, to the newest member of our team, Lilit (Lee-Leet)! We call her Lili (Lee-Lee) for short. Lili is a Malayan Tapir who came here all the way from Thailand with KSU Global Education.

She loves reading and learning about history, so she’s excited to call Sturgis Library her new home. A fun, new chapter of Lili’s adventures around KSU has just begun!

Banned Books Week is a national event that began in 1982 in response to an increased number of book challenges in libraries, bookstores, and schools.

The issue continues to this day, with organizations like PEN America tracking over 22,000 book bans from 2021-2025, mostly targeting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ authors and stories.

KSU Libraries celebrates this week to embrace the freedom to read and to honor those stories that are frequently challenged as we continue to strive for free and open access to information for all.

You're invited to celebrate Banned Books Week with us at the following events:

• Silent Read-In, Tuesday, October 6 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at Johnson Library, Marietta campus.

• Open Mic Night, Wednesday, October 7 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at The Nest, Sturgis Library - First Floor, Kennesaw campus.

• Gender Q***r: A Memoir Book Club, Wednesday, October 21 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM in Room 113, Sturgis Library, First Floor, Kennesaw campus.

The KSU Libraries are celebrating the Freedom to Read during Banned Books Week!

Join us at the Johnson Library on the Marietta campus for a Silent Read-In to honor and experience LGBTQ, Hispanic, and Native American stories, which have been frequently challenged.

Our goal is to acknowledge the work done during the Civil Rights Movement and bring attention to BIPOC and LGBTQ+ authors and the history that informs their stories.

n 2024, over 5,000 individual books were challenged. By reading these books that have been challenged or banned we turn the quiet act of reading into a powerful form of activism and solidarity.

We hope to see you on Tuesday, October 6 at 1:00 pm where you will read a book of your choosing in a place you determine in the library, then come together with other readers for a discussion and snack. No registration necessary.

Every March, our team hosts the Sticker Showdown on the Marietta campus, and we need your help shaping next year’s tournament!

You voted and chose board games for the 2027 Sticker Showdown. Now, if you see a poster in Johnson Library or a question poll on our Instagram stories asking what your favorite board games are, weigh in!

Your answers will decide which games make it into the competition and go head-to-head in the 2027 Sticker Showdown. 🎲 🏆

From scrolls and codices to zines, ebooks, and beyond, the book has taken many forms and is still evolving.
