Exercise Science & Sport Mgmt | Health Promotion & Physical Ed | Social Work & Human Svcs | Nursing | Children & Family Programs | AILSG | Center for Human Sport Performance & Wellbeing Kennesaw State University's Wellstar College of Health and Human Services was created for the purpose of combining a variety of disciplines that

have as their central focus the health, physical fitness, and human service needs of our community. The programs offered by the College of Health and Human Services include Exercise Science, Health and Physical Education, Human Services, Nursing, Sport Management, and graduate programs in Exercise Science, Nursing, and Social Work. As public service and traditional health care jobs become more closely related, we believe that students are best educated in an academic environment where they can interact with a variety of disciplines in a way that approximates the real world of work. Our students have the opportunity not only to interact with highly qualified, well-respected faculty but also to involve themselves with a wide variety of community activities from student teaching, to clinical projects, to internships, to community service projects, to interact with community experts. We offer a "real-life" as opposed to an "ivory tower" education, and the success of our graduates in the job market is evidence of this.

Is better health just a few steps away?

In this episode of Research Matters, we talk with Professor of Exercise Science Bob Buresh, who leads an interdisciplinary team investigating how walking can be a transformative, accessible, and cost-effective approach to fighting obesity.

The research aims to confirm initial findings suggesting that increased step counts correlate with improved health indicators, such as reduced body fat and lower insulin levels. Once proven, the predictive model could revolutionize patient care. Instead of prescribing rigorous exercise routines or medications, healthcare professionals might recommend achievable daily step goals.

Meet Kennesaw State University researcher and assistant professor of nursing Melissa Osborne. 🚸

In the SKYE Research Lab, Osborne and her team are working on ParentSHIELD-XR, a virtual reality program to help parents recognize hazards in their homes. Their goal is to prevent childhood injuries by helping parents identify and address any dangers before injuries occur.

“With young children, supervision is so important, and parents don't always get the chance to practice that. This virtual reality program will allow them to engage supervision practices in a low-risk environment.”
