On Friday, October 23, the Bagwell Center will present Free To Speak, a three-part documentary series featuring thought-provoking, ironic, and often heartbreaking stories about the role of free speech in society.

Hosted by Nadine Strossen, the series brings together free-speech experts, critics, and defenders to explore its power and controversies throughout history and today.

In the latest Bagwell Center Commentary, Dr. Timothy Mathews examines the “Stop Insider Trading Act” and uses it to explore logrolling, vote trading, and the bundling of unrelated proposals in legislation. Can these practices encourage genuine compromise, or can they be used to score political points? Sometimes, the answer is both.

Building financial literacy takes more than a single lecture. It takes repetition, practice, and a community.

Dr. Borhan Sayedy returned to the Richards College of Business at the University of West Georgia for his personal finance workshop, his second invitation to speak there. It follows last week's talk with IAC Scholars at Georgia Tech. These workshops are part of his ongoing effort to promote financial literacy across universities and encourage students to connect with one another and put proven financial strategies into practice.
This outreach is supported through the Bagwell Center's FLIP (Financial Literacy Initiative Program), which aims to equip students with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed financial decisions.
KSU Financial Freedom Club President Ben Tolliday, a former student of Dr. Sayedy's, joined the session and shared his own experience with saving and budgeting.

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees gave the session an overall rating of 4.82 out of 5, and for many, the highlight was a simplified retirement plan built in Excel using a Roth IRA and the S&P 500. When asked whether they would attend another financial literacy workshop, 95% said yes, 5% said maybe, and no one said no.
Attendees also expressed interest in future sessions covering investing, debt repayment, student loans, credit scores, and budgeting. We're already looking forward to the next one!

We are grateful to the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) for awarding a Free Society Grant to support the Bagwell Center's Reading Group program during the 2026-2027 academic year. The grant is designated to help fund student reading groups and guest speakers that encourage thoughtful discussion and engagement with ideas surrounding free societies and economic inquiry.

Support like this allows us to expand opportunities for Kennesaw State students to connect with challenging ideas, learn from one another, and build a deeper understanding of the institutions that shape our world.
