The Office of Research at Kennesaw State University (KSU) was thrilled to welcome a wonderful group of students and staff from the Fulton Innovation Academy to the new Robin and Doug Shore Innovation Center last week for an interactive day of research and discovery!

The day kicked off with a panel led by KSU student researchers and Executive Director of Undergraduate Research Dr. Amy Buddie. From there, students explored the building through both guided and self-guided tours, wrapping up with research in action brought to us by Assistant Professor of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Dr. Chris Voicu's lab. Students met the robot this lab is modifying to shape the future of healthcare, giving them a glimpse at the real-world impacts of research.

Meet Kennesaw State University professor Aaron French from the Coles College of Business.

French is looking at why people respond so strongly to ‘fake news,’ and the answer comes down to human emotions. His work could help limit the spread of misinformation in the future and teach us how to combat it.

“When information feels personally relevant or triggers anger or fear, people are far more likely to accept it, like it and share it,” French said.

This week in research history, Mount Vesuvius erupted, killing thousands in ancient Italy in one of history’s most infamous natural disasters. The cities were buried under thick layers of volcanic material and mud, destroying many buildings, leaving survivors with little to return to and little hope of rebuilding.

Now at KSU, Dr. Da Hu from the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology leads a team exploring new ways to assess damage after disasters, helping responders better understand affected areas and quickly direct resources where they’re needed most.

Kennesaw State University research is moving from the lab into the community.

An interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Professor of Information Systems Dominic Thomas has developed CaseFinder, an AI-powered tool to help police officers and co-responder teams identify people experiencing behavioral health crises that could otherwise go undetected.

Using natural language processing and machine learning, CaseFinder analyzes police incident reports to flag potential behavioral health cases for follow-up from a co-response team. The tool was validated by the Cobb County Police Department and is now being adopted by the Moultrie Police Department to help connect more people with the care they need.

The pilot marks an important step in translating KSU research into a real-world solution that could strengthen public safety and behavioral health response across Georgia.
