Can one sleep in a dream factory? In 1963, Andy Warhol filmed his lover, the poet John Giorno, sleeping. The resulting film, “Sleep,” is over five hours long and depicts Giorno sleeping in a series of long shadowy takes. Cinema and poetry: these, we know, are the stuff of dreams. But what of sleep? What comes into view when we attend to representations of sleep — in film, literature, and psychoanalytic theory — that are significant precisely because they do not offer a dream to interpret? The product of interpretive exhaustion, this talk seeks ways of thinking, writing, and sleeping toward the dissolution of forms, and in the company of others.
