Study Japanese at Carthage Hello! This is an official page of the Japanese studies at Carthage College! Do you want to add an important language skill to your resume?

Are you interested in speaking a language that is very different from your own? Are you a fan of manga and anime? Have you thought about living/studying in a country with an amazing mixture of exciting pop culture and ancient traditions? If your answer to any of these questions is “yes,” then the Japanese program at Carthage is for you. Japanese has become one of the most widely taught foreign languages in the United States. It has critical importance in a wide range of professions and interests, including politics, business, education, and technology. The Japanese Program
The core of the Carthage Japanese program is the four-year language curriculum. The goal of the Japanese program is to help students develop proficiency in Japanese in a socio-cultural context. Students not only gain fluency in reading, writing, and speaking Japanese, but they also acquire a deep understanding of Japanese people and culture. Study Abroad
Japanese majors are required to study in Japan for a minimum of six months. Tokyo Gakugei University is Carthage’s official exchange program in Japan. J-Term
Travel to Japan on a month-long study tour led by professors from various departments who specialize in Japanese society. The study tours provide students opportunities to have direct contact with Japanese people and culture. (https://www.carthage.edu/january-term/)

Beyond the classroom...

Bunkasai (Carthage Japanese Cultural Festival) and Annual Speech Contest
Showcase your oral and expressive skills in Japanese while presenting formal speeches and performing Japanese songs, skits, dances, and martial arts. Japanese Lunch Table
During the weekly Japanese Lunch Table, chat in Japanese with one another, professors, Target Language Experts, and exchange students from Japan. Japanese Club
Japanese Club is a student-run organization that hosts meetings and events where you can expand your knowledge of Japan and its culture outside of class. https://www.facebook.com/carthagejapan/

Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program Information Session Successfully Held today!

The JET Program Coordinator in Chicago, Ms. Magda, visited Carthage College on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and led a one-hour information session for Carthage students.

Approximately 20 students attended the information session, including several students from outside the Japanese Program.
Magda provided detailed information about the program, including an overview of the ALT and CIR positions, the application process, and strategies for a successful application. As a JET alumna, she also shared her personal experiences of living and working in Japan through the program.

Carthage students actively participated in the session and asked many questions, making the event informative and engaging.

The application deadline for this year’s JET Program is Nov. 13.
