Our ISSS Student Spotlight this week is Montserrat Luna!
Country of Origin: México

What is your favorite thing about Kent State?
What I love the most about Kent State is all the amazing opportunities there are to get involved in our community! As a rising fashion merchandising sophomore, I’ve gotten to do so many things that I would have never even dreamed of: modeling in fashion shows, doing photoshoots, getting to learn from industry giants, and more! Don’t be afraid to be involved and show up!
(And of course I love the friends that I’ve made here!)

What advice would you give another international student?
Be yourself always! Coming to a new place where you don’t know anyone can be a nerve-wracking experience, but I promise you that you will find your people, and they will make you feel like you’ve known them your whole life!
Don’t be afraid to share your culture, always be proud of where you come from, and never lose sight of your goals!

What’s your favorite song/album/artist?
Current favorite: Risk It All - Bruno Mars

Where is the best place you have travelled to?
I’ve gotten the chance to travel to many places with my parents! But my favorites have definitely been Egypt and Turkey!

What is your favorite thing about Kent State?
The best thing about studying at Kent State University is the numerous opportunities that the university provides to students to develop their personalities outside of the class as well. Specifically, I have had a chance to work as a research assistant under the supervision of one of my professors, and I have also managed to be a member of the Honors College program and I was also selected for the ESDRI research fellowship, which helped me become better at practical skills rather than just theoretical knowledge.

Why do you want to study in the United States?
The reason why I would like to study in the U.S. is that it provides great academic courses, research work, and experience. As a student at Kent State University, I have benefited from my research and involvement on campus.

What advice would you give another international student?
The best suggestion I can give is to be confident and don’t fear anything. Many obstacles are going to come your way; however, you should consider them experiences rather than problems. Regardless of how tough they are, they will definitely provide you with some learning.

What is your favorite food?
Fish curry, Fish fry, Biriyani

Where is the best place you have travelled to?
Niagara waterfalls
