The first week of classes brought the CAED community together for our All College Meeting, a chance to connect, look ahead and hear what’s in store for the semester. Dean Mistur discussed the college’s priorities and the changing landscape of the built environment. Program directors highlighted upcoming opportunities across our programs, while student organizations introduced their groups and shared ways for students to get involved. Our undergraduate student senator also spoke about his role and how he can serve as a resource and advocate for the CAED community.

We’re looking forward to an amazing Fall '26 semester!

Invisible Practice
Invisible introduces the works of Axi:Ome—a design practice led by Heather Woofter and Sung Ho Kim formerly in St. Louis and now in Cleveland and Austin—through a collection of essays and projects that map the firm’s trajectory across seven years, from 2015 to 2023.

About Axi:Ome
Axi:Ome is a design practice led by Heather Woofter and Sung Ho Kim in Cleveland and Austin. Axi:Ome engages the architectural investigation of processes explored through blending academic research with practice, challenging the boundaries of conventional architectural practice. From built constructs to conceptual investigations, which is the intricate dance between ideas and reality that uncovers the complexities that shape the contemporary environment by cartographing the legitimization of architectural practice that engages the pedagogical visions of the profession and the education.

CAED students kicked off the new academic year with one of our favorite traditions, the annual Student Chair Roll!

Students met up to roll their chairs throughout campus, making their way to their final destination at the CAED.

Nothing better than seeing the studios filled with students again!

Grounds Grids Grammar Exhibition
by Paul Mosley

Now on display
Aug. 20 – Sept. 2
Armstrong Gallery

“Grounds Grids Grammar" examines territory as an idea produced over time through sovereignty, jurisdiction, cartography, and power. While architecture and urban design have largely treated territory as the substrate upon which buildings are made — a surface to be surveyed, divided, and improved — the exhibition traces the historical construction of that surface and tests an alternative: a territorial project in which ecological expansion, non-proprietary land tenure, and ethics of care prevail.

Through drawings and full-scale construction, the exhibition proposes a counterproposition for territory in architecture. Rather than subdividing land to intensify development, an adaptive grid subdivides most finely where land is most damaged, so that the grid's own geometry registers where repair is most needed.

That logic is tested at full scale in Pyra, a wildlife and controlled-burn monitoring structure under construction at the Westbrook Artists' Site in Winterset, Iowa, where a decade of controlled burns has converted former soybean and corn monoculture to endemic tallgrass prairie. Pyra appears here as a scale model, accompanied by aerial footage of the site, a nearby limestone surface mine, and an industrial silo complex.

The exhibition is by Paul Mosley, Assistant Professor of Architecture and Urban Design.
Pyra by Fields (Paul Mosley and Laure Nolte) with Kevin Lair, Iowa State University, and Seth Andrews. Scale model by Corbin Cunningham. Renderings by Joseph Perry. Supported by Kent State University's College of Architecture and Environmental Design, the URC/SURE Program, and the UTC. Footings donated by Perma-Column, LLC.
