May 4th marks a day to remember the victims of a deadly conflict, and it serves as a reminder of the need for non-violent protest and conflict resolution.

Born from the violent conflict on May 4th, which took place only 56 years ago, Kent State’s School of Peace and Conflict Studies stands as a living memorial, transforming grief into purpose and honoring those lost by teaching future generations the power of peace, understanding, and change.

Kent State’s School of Peace and Conflict Studies grew out of the Center for Peaceful Change, founded in 1971 as a living memorial to the victims of the tragedy, whose names are Jeffrey Miller, Allison Krause, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder. It later became the Center for Applied Conflict Management and, in 2017, evolved into the School it is today.

What house would you be sorted into based on your conflict style?

Competer House: Boldness, Courage, Action-first Mindset
🦁Those in the Competer House tend to charge into conflict head-on. Like competing, they prioritize doing what they believe is right, even if it means overriding others.

Compromiser House: Logic, Fairness, Intellectual Balance
📘Those in the Compromiser House are logical thinkers. Compromise is essentially a rational trade-off, finding a solution that’s “good enough” for everyone based on reason.

Accommodator House: Loyalty, Kindness, Harmony
🍯Those in the Accommodator House are the most willing to yield to maintain peace. Like accommodating, they value people over winning.

Collaborator House: Ambition, Resourcefulness, Long-game Thinking
🐍The Collaborator House’s real strength is strategic alliance-building. True collaboration often requires calculated cooperation, negotiation, and aligning interests.
