Kent State University Advanced Materials and Liquid Crystal Institute

Kent State University Advanced Materials and Liquid Crystal Institute Academic and research facility at Kent State University. The LCI was named in honor of its founder, Dr. Glenn H. defense agencies.

Brown, by the Kent State University Board of Trustees in 198...6. Brown, a faculty member in Kent's Chemistry Department from 1961-1985 and Regents Professor from 1968-1985, established the LCI in 1965 and served as its director until his retirement in 1983. In 1965, the Kent State University Board of Trustees authorized the formation of the Liquid Crystal Institute under Glenn Brown's direction.

Other scientists at Kent joined in seeking funding for liquid crystal research. Major grants came from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and U.S. Research at the Institute, in collaboration with the Departments of Chemistry and Physics, helped establish the field of liquid crystals as an active area in both of these disciplines. In 1990, the National Science Foundation selected a consortium of Kent State University, Case Western Reserve University, and the University of Akron to serve as Ohio's only Science and Technology Research Center. ALCOM, the Center for Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials, is an interdisciplinary, national center for advanced research and development of liquid crystal optoelectronic materials, technology, and consumer products. Kent State University's new Liquid Crystal and Materials Sciences building was completed in Fall 1996. The three-story facility provides 65,000 gross square feet to house the Liquid Crystal Institute and the Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program. The building includes classrooms, a 150 seat auditorium, 22,000 square feet of research laboratories for more than 25 individual labs, clean rooms (for creating prototype liquid crystal displays and training students and technicians in display manufacturing techniques), offices, a display manufacturing line, and associated service and support facilities.

Materials Day 2023 is coming up!

It's almost that time of year. Our annual Materials Day event will kick off on Friday evening, April 28th, and end Saturday evening, April 29th, after a day of research and poster presentations. The theme for this year is 'Chirality and Optical activity'

The first evening will start with opening remarks by AMLCI Director Dr. Torsten Hegmann, followed by a keynote lecture by Dr. Noel A. Clark (University of Colorado @ Boulder), then a featured talk from Dr. Nicholas A. Kotov (University of Michigan). Following them will be the AMLCI fellowship award ceremony, where three outstanding graduate students will present their recent research, and receive fellowship awards for their outstanding work.

Giving Tuesday is Nov. 29!
For 24 hours on Tuesday, Nov. 29, the Kent State University Foundation has pledged $100,000 to match your gifts dollar for dollar (up to $1,000.00 per donor) to the fund of YOUR choice.

That’s right, ANY Kent State fund is eligible to receive the match, which will be available for 24 hours EST or until it runs out (and that can happen early). So, rise and shine to help us make the world Forever Brighter!

Summer Research Experiences at KSU

This year, the Office of Student Research will host 127 Kent State students in the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE). This is the largest number of students that the program has hosted since its inception in 2016, surpassing our previous high of 72 in 2020. This surge in participation underscores students’ desire to gain experience by working closely with a faculty member and the value of these experiences for students and their future careers.

We are indebted to our faculty mentors and to our supporters including Dr. William Doane, emeritus professor and director of LCI, Dr. Paul DiCorleto, retired vice president, Research and Sponsored Programs, and Dr. Beverly Warren, president emerita, all of whom have worked through the Kent State Foundation to create endowments to support the SURE program.
