🌍✈️ Our nursing students are currently exploring global healthcare in beautiful Florence, Italy! 🇮🇹 Last week, they visited The Museum of the Innocents, formerly the Hospital of Innocents, which operated from the 1400s through the late 1800s as a safe haven for children.
Families could anonymously leave children at the hospital, often alongside a small memento that was carefully cataloged so they could potentially reunite in the future. The children were cared for by nuns and educated by the Catholic Church before being adopted or released at age seventeen. If a family never returned, the child was taught a trade to help support themselves in adulthood.
Experiences like this offer our students a deeper understanding of the history of caregiving and the ways communities have supported vulnerable populations across generations. 💙
