Physics in Action: From Magic to Ecosystems

Department of Mathematical Sciences was delighted to share highlights from Dr. Peter Palffyโ€™s recent Pint of Science talk, with assistance from Tianyi Guo.

Dr. Palffyโ€™s talk explored the fascinating world of liquid crystals, which appear not only in technologies such as flat screen displays, smart windows, and augmented reality devices, but also throughout nature, including butterfly wings, plant tissues, DNA, tendons, cornea, and skin.

Through engaging demonstrations, he showed the surprising connections between physics, soft matter, and magic, making complex scientific ideas accessible and exciting for a broad audience.

Thanks to Dr. Palffy and Tianyi Guo for representing our department and sharing science with the community.
