Can a medieval masterpiece become universally accessible?

Kent State’s own MaryAnn Devine, Ph.D., recently traveled to France to find out! As one of only two U.S. evaluators on an elite UNESCO World Heritage Oversight sub-committee, Devine is currently serving her second, four-year term assessing the world's most iconic historic sites.

In her latest feature for the EHS Think Tank Blog, she takes us behind the scenes of her high-profile assessment of Mont-Saint-Michel. Discover how she balances the preservation of ancient architecture with cutting-edge accessibility solutions—from robotics and drones to multi-format wayfinding. Turning Traditional Play into Dynamic STEM Lessons!

Big congratulations to Minyoung Gil, Ph.D., (School of Teaching, Learning & Curriculum Studies) on being named a Summer 2026 John and Fonda Elliot Design Innovation Faculty Fellow!

Through her new project, “Designing a STEM Play Toolkit,” Gil is collaborating with the Design Innovation Hub’s makerspace technology to turn traditional spinning tops into hands-on childhood lessons on physics, motion, and engineering.

Developed in partnership with the Gerald H. Read Center, this innovative toolkit equips future teachers with customizable 3D-printed tools—and low-tech alternative guides using everyday items—to ensure equitable STEM learning in every classroom. We can't wait to see this research keep learning in motion! https://shorturl.at/tRMuj

Welcome to Kent State, global scholars!

This summer, Kent State University is proud to host 23 exceptional Fulbright scholars representing 20 different countries for an intensive four-week Pre-Academic Program. Running from July 13 through August 7, this collaborative launchpad prepares these bright minds for master's and doctoral programs at some of America's most competitive graduate schools, including Columbia, Georgetown, and Carnegie Mellon.

Beyond advanced academic and communication training provided by the Gerald H. Read Center and the English as a Second Language Center, these scholars are experiencing the best of Northeast Ohio. From visiting Niagara Falls and Playhouse Square to connecting deeply with local friendship families, they are building confidence and lifelong bonds before scattering across the country for their degrees.

Kent State is honored to be the first stop on their American journey as these individuals prepare to lead ministries, labs, courtrooms, and classrooms worldwide.
