Congratulations to one of our recent graduates, Deelan Jariwala, who received the Rosenstiel Outstanding Research Award this year in recognition of his exceptional contributions to multiple research projects. Pictured below are Deelan and Dr. Christopher Landsea at the AMS Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology. During his time at Rosenstiel, Deelan worked with Dr. Landsea on revising historical storms from the 1970s in the Atlantic Hurricane Database (HURDAT), as well as with Michael Fischer on an NSF-funded project focused on vortex alignment. Special thanks to Drs. Landsea and Fischer for their outstanding mentorship and dedication to supporting student research. Best wishes to Deelan as he continues his academic journey working with Dr. Xiaomin Chen at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in the fall.

It's always bittersweet to say goodbye to our seniors. This group was phenomenal. 6/7 participated in independent research projects where they presented their work at conferences, co-authored publications, and will graduate with Departmental Honors. The one that didn't do research was busy producing CanesCast, UM's weather show that is produced by and stars our broadcast Meteorologists. She is heading to Portland, Maine to begin her successful career. Congratulations to all!!

We are looking to hire a half-time lecturer ! Responsibilities are primarily within the undergraduate meteorology program. The base teaching load for a half-time position is two courses per semester. The teaching assignment would primarily include up to three sections per year of the Introduction to Weather and Climate class intended for the larger student population at U of Miami. Other potential undergraduate classes include Introduction to Python Programming - a requirement for the Rosenstiel BS - and Climate Change, a general education course. We are also considering developing a new undergraduate general education course tentatively titled Hurricanes and Their Impacts for fall of 2028. The successful applicant will be involved in curriculum development as needed and encouraged to design and implement new courses when relevant. The half-time position pays 45K for the 4 courses and comes with benefits (health care, retirement). A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or a related field is preferred. Must have some teaching experience at the university level. Successful candidates will provide a statement on their teaching philosophy and experience. The position would begin spring semester of 2027. The application review will remain open until August 15, 2026.

Our UM AMS chapter was excited to welcome students from FIU along with members of the AMS Greater South Florida Professional chapter to last night's meeting. The event provided an excellent opportunity for students to network with local meteorologists and gain insights from Dr. Wallace Hogsett, Science and Operations Officer at the National Hurricane Center. Dr. Hogsett gave an informative talk about his career, highlighting his experience across both the private sector and the federal government. Thanks to everyone who turned out!

Congratulations to our Broadcast Meteorology students, senior Ann Badowsky and junior William Depaola, on helping our team win the WSI Max University Challenge hosted by The Weather Company for the Fall 2025 semester!

This prestigious award recognizes excellence in graphical design, viewer engagement, system mastery, and creativity. Ann and William earned the win with a standout weather segment inspired by the UM Hurricanes’ centennial homecoming football game against Syracuse University. Through UM TV, our students gain hands-on experience with industry-leading tools, empowering them to craft compelling, story-driven weather presentations that truly connect with audiences.
