The URI College of Arts and Sciences Department of Art and Art History invites the community to explore these questions through Show Me Your Papers / A ver, ¿y tus papeles?, a touring exhibition examining the experiences of immigration, borders, and dual identity through the powerful medium of printmaking.

Featuring works by 13 artists, the exhibition explores how documentation can shape a person’s identity, freedom, and sense of belonging. Curated by Eddy A. López and Miguel A. Aragón, the collection highlights the human experiences behind migration and the realities those navigating borders face.

Join us for the opening reception on Oct. 29 from 4:30–6:30 p.m.!

URI Theatre presents Proof, David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play directed by URI alumnus Jimmy Calitri. This intimate, four-character drama explores family, grief, caregiving, mental illness, and gender equality, offering audiences a thought-provoking look at the complexities of human relationships.

The production stars URI senior theatre student Princess Johnson as Catherine, a young woman navigating her father’s death, her complicated family relationships, and questions about her own intellectual abilities. Set in the Fine Arts Center’s J-Studio, Proof invites audiences to reflect on how we process grief, care for loved ones, and recognize others' contributions. The production also creates opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and conversations that extend beyond the stage.

What happens when a digital image leaves the screen and becomes something you can touch? URI Assistant Professor of Print Media, Travess Smalley, explores that question in his latest work, transforming pixels, patterns, and digital code into physical art.

Smalley’s first book, Pixel Rugs, explores the connection between digital images and traditional forms of print and textile making. Using risograph printing, pen plotting, and hand-woven rugs, he turns digital designs into tactile works of art, showing how something created on a screen can take on a completely new life in the physical world.

From a new book debuting at the Museum of the Moving Image to an artist residency in New York and an exhibition in Paris, Smalley has had an exciting year. Read more about his work, creative process, and the journey from pixels to physical art.

Join us for the first annual Computer Science Connect Day on Sept. 18 in the Memorial Union Ballroom.

Hosted by the URI Department of Computer Science and Statistics, this full-day event explores AI’s evolving role in computer science education, connecting classroom learning with workforce readiness and career pathways in the rapidly changing technology sector.

The day kicks off at 9 a.m. with an interactive conversation featuring Dr. Michael L. Littman, associate provost for artificial intelligence at Brown University, followed by panels, workshops, and networking with industry leaders, alumni, faculty, and more.

The URI community is thrilled to officially open the doors to the newly transformed Fine Arts Center!

Celebrations included remarks from URI and state leaders, as talented students and alums from the URI Faculty Brass Quintet and theatre department filled the halls with performances.

The $99 million transformation includes a new 71,000-square-foot academic building and renovated classrooms, studios, performance spaces and more, giving students and faculty in URI’s art and art history, music, and theatre programs new spaces to create, perform and collaborate.

We can’t wait to see this space come to life!

Twenty-five years later, we remember.

Today, the University of Rhode Island honors all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, including five members of the URI community. We remember their lives, the courage of first responders, and the countless acts of service and compassion in the face of tragedy.
