More Qs & As from URI Fulbright Scholar Alyssa Botelho.

What project or work are you most excited about?

My feature screenplay, The Last Frontier! Set in WWI São Miguel, it follows a real American Marine stationed on the island to patrol the surrounding sea for German submarines in the wake of the 1917 bombing of Ponta Delgada. Here’s the logline for the short proof-of-concept we’re shooting while we’re here: When a wild-hearted WWI American aviator is held captive by a reclusive former nun in the Azores, their wordless connection tests his hunger for glory and her fear of the war-torn world beyond her secret garden.

How has this experience challenged you?

I’ve always said that communicating in foreign languages is my Achilles’ heel. I never imagined myself speaking a different language confidently, and I’ll admit that it’s a conscious effort everyday. It comes with a bit of social anxiety, but the Azorean people have embraced me and my broken Portuguese with open arms. Estou a aprender, todos os dias!
