Today we hosted a short activity for some visiting Upward Bound students. They built popsicle stick towers, which we enjoyed breaking. The goal was to be as efficient as possible-- to hold the most load with the least amount of material. One team's tower held 140 lbs, more than 1300 times its own weight. As you can see from the photos, deflection was the big enemy of these lightweight and flexible towers.
