This year ISI Florence and Roger Williams University celebrate 25 years of the RWU Architecture Program in Florence!

To mark the anniversary, architect and ISI professor Carlo Achilli curated an exhibition showcasing student projects for the urban renewal of seven Florentine piazzas. The projects explore how thoughtful design can make public spaces more livable, promote sustainability, and respect the city’s historic character.

The exhibition celebrates 25 years of architectural education, cultural exchange, and hands-on learning in Florence, where the city itself has served as a classroom for generations of students.

📌A crisp autumn day exploring central Italy!

Our daytrip started on the tufa cliffs of Orvieto, descending the spiral stairs of Pozzo di San Patrizio, marveling at the stunning Duomo, and wandering historic streets and quaint shops.

We wrapped up in Bolsena with a relaxing afternoon stroll through town and along the lake.

🌿 Community Stewardship Day | Our 'Giornata' della Custodia

This fall, Umbra students joined the local community in Piazza Monteluce for Giornata della Custodia, an initiative connected to Settimana della Custodia and dedicated to caring for Perugia’s shared spaces.

In collaboration with CIA Umbria – Confederazione Italiana Agricoltori, students worked alongside local children and community members around a young olive tree, a symbol deeply connected to the region and its agricultural traditions.

Children wrote their hopes, wishes, and ideas for the piazza on pieces of paper, which were then tied to the tree. Umbra students also helped repot the olive tree and prepare it to become a lasting symbol of the people who contributed to the day.🌱

Have you ever been to a food co-op? 🌱

Students in our Food, Sustainability, & Environment program recently visited Birà Food Co-op, the first and only food co-op in Umbria, to see firsthand how a cooperative grocery model can grow directly out of the community it serves.

The experience began in the heart of Piazza Birago, where students got a feel for the everyday life and energy of the neighborhood before stepping inside Birà.

A special thank you to Arianna Bastianini, one of Birà’s co-founders, for welcoming our group, leading the visit, and sharing her knowledge and experience.

Owned and run by its members, Birà is much more than a place to shop. It is a community hub that connects local residents while supporting more sustainable food networks and grassroots civic participation.

For our students, the visit offered a powerful real-world example of how community-driven initiatives can nourish both people and places. 🌍🥕🤝

September is almost over, but there are some moments we definitely want to remember.

Our student weekend in the Cinque Terre was one of them.

Located along the spectacular Ligurian coast, the Cinque Terre — “Five Lands” — is made up of five colorful seaside villages nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and steep, terraced hillsides. It’s a landscape shaped over centuries by the people who have lived, farmed, and built along this extraordinary coastline.

For our students, weekends like this are about so much more than visiting a new place. They are a chance to learn, discover, experience Italian culture, spend time together, and see with their own eyes one of the most beautiful corners of Italy.

Because some of the best learning happens outside the classroom.
