Welcome back, Faculty and Staff!

On Sept. 22, faculty and staff from across Oregon Tech gathered for our annual Convocation as we prepared for the start of the 2026-27 academic year and welcomed new and returning colleagues to campus.

Convocation is an opportunity to recognize the people whose dedication, service, and commitment make a difference for our students and university community. Congratulations to this year's award recipients:

• Student Affairs Most Valuable Partner Award: Dr. Lara Pracht, Director of Academic Affairs at Oregon Tech Portland-Metro; and Michelle Meyer, Director of Audit and Compliance
• Oregon Tech Foundation Rising Faculty Scholar Award: Dr. Rachel Edwards, Assistant Professor of Natural Sciences
• Oregon Tech Foundation Faculty Achievement Award: Dr. Su Jin Lee, Assistant Professor and Program Director of Geomatics; and Christy VanRooyen, Associate Professor of Natural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Natural Resources
• Faculty Mentor Award: Dr. Kevin Brown, Professor of Communication Studies
• Classified Staff Award: Sonja Bieler, Admissions Business Systems Analyst
• President’s Staff Award: Tony Richey, Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer; and Michelle Meyer, Director of Audit and Compliance

Formal awards were also presented to recent Oregon Tech Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award recipients Professor Todd Breedlove and Associate Professor Richard Carson.

Convocation also included years-of-service recognition for faculty and staff whose dedication continues to strengthen Oregon Tech. This year, 57 employees were honored for reaching service milestones ranging from five to 40 years, representing a combined 615 years of service to the university.

Great teaching changes lives, and two Oregon Tech faculty members are being recognized for doing just that.

Please join us in congratulating Professor Todd Breedlove and Associate Professor Rich Carson, recipients of the 2026 Oregon Tech Foundation Excellence in Teaching Awards.

Selected through student nominations, this award honors faculty who make a lasting impact through their dedication, support, and commitment to student success.

For nearly 35 years, Todd has been part of the Oregon Tech community as a student, alumnus, educator, mentor, and leader. Rich returned to teach in the same Medical Imaging program that launched his own career and has spent two decades preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

While their paths are different, both share a passion for helping students reach those unforgettable "lightbulb moments" when learning clicks and confidence grows.

Thank you, Todd and Rich, for the countless ways you inspire, challenge, support, and encourage Oregon Tech students, faculty, staff, and alumni every day. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.

Oregon Tech Dental Hygiene students from our Salem program recently returned from a service-learning experience in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

Alongside fellow Dental Hygiene students from Klamath Falls, 13 Salem students and their instructors spent a week providing free dental care and oral health services to community members with limited access to care. Together, the team helped 657 patients through cleanings, fluoride treatments, fillings, extractions, X-rays, and more.

The trip gave students the chance to learn about a different culture, strengthen their clinical skills, and work as a team.

We are proud of our students for their hard work, compassion, and commitment to helping others. Thank you to the donors, supporters, and partners who helped make this experience possible.
