Professor and Entomologist Charity Owings’ research was featured in the July 2026 issue of National Geographic, highlighting how blow flies can help detect pathogens in wildlife and monitor ecosystem health. The work she is conducting in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is critical for preventing the spread of wildlife disease.

The Herbert College of Agriculture has launched the Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics—the first undergraduate degree of its kind in Tennessee and the only bioinformatics undergraduate program in the SEC.

Combining biology, computer science, data analytics, agriculture, and environmental science, the program prepares students to address some of the world’s greatest challenges related to food security, environmental sustainability, and the future of the bioeconomy. Graduates will enter in-demand careers with expertise in precision agriculture, artificial intelligence, gene identification, and more. 🧬💻
