UT College of Architecture and Design

UT College of Architecture and Design The College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

We are a community of curious, creative thinkers who are passionate about transforming our world through design. We explore through research, collaborate through public service, learn through making and discover through design. Here at the UT College of Architecture and Design, our students engage in collaborative studios, where students from all disciplines--Architecture, Interior Architecture an

d Landscape Architecture--work side by side, learning from each other and sharing diverse perspectives. We're home to a world-acclaimed solar-powered house and world-changing design/build program that reaches from Haiti to the hills of Appalachia. Through our unique Governor's Chair for Energy + Urbanism program, we worked alongside Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Oak Ridge National Laboratory to create the internationally ranked AMIE (additive manufacturing and integrated energy). Our faculty and students embrace the Volunteer Spirit of the University of Tennessee as we explore, make and transform.

Jeanne and her late husband, Neal Richardson ('70), spent years investing in educational opportunities at the University of Tennessee. Today, Jeanne continues that shared legacy through her support of the College of Architecture and Design’s Summer Design Camp.

The camp offers more than a week of creative exploration, it also provides campers with a glimpse into campus life. Her gift helps make it possible for students to experience design education who might not otherwise have the opportunity—showcasing her belief that education should be accessible to everyone.

We loved reconnecting with our alumni and friends in Chattanooga last night. From the continued growth of the School of Architecture through new faculty and an expanding student community to new opportunities in the School of Design, including a new international program, there is so much to celebrate.

Thank you to our reception sponsors, Matthew Lyle ('10) and Franklin Architects, and Rob Fowler ('81) and River Street Architecture, for helping make this gathering possible. We are grateful for the continued support of our community that makes moments like these possible.

What city should we visit next? Let us know in the comments.

We’re proud to celebrate recent graphic design graduate Alexander Long and his remarkable achievement at the 2026 DIELINE Awards.

Long’s project, Amiten, transformed discarded risograph ink cartridges into beautifully designed ambient lamps and earned first place in an international design competition. What started as a creative idea grew into an inspiring example of thoughtful, sustainable design.

Graduation is more than a ceremony–it is the continuation of a legacy built by generations of students who have walked the same halls, shared the same traditions, and carried the same school spirit forward through the years.

The Class of 2026 now becomes part of that lasting story, joining the thousands of graduates who came before them. Congratulations to the newest members our Big Orange family. 🧡

Each year as the semester comes to a close, our halls are filled with the focused energy of final reviews, capstones, and the quiet reflection that marks the end of another chapter. While each class leaves its own mark, a shared spirit of dedication and creativity continues to connect generations.

Here’s to the culmination of a semester well spent and to the traditions that continue to shape each new class of students.
