What is the cost of hatred? During this three-part discussion series, we will examine the cost to society of group-focused hatred.

Recent protests have highlighted systemic racism, but racism has defined our nation’s history since its beginning. How can we understand the ongoing costs that racial oppression levels on our society? Jon Shefner, professor of Sociology, will moderate a panel discussion with fellow University of Tennessee, Knoxville, faculty and Knoxville City Councilwoman Amelia Parker.

Assistant/ Associate/ Full Professor

The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS), in combination with the Department of Nutrition, seeks applications for an open rank, tenure track faculty position in the Public Health Nutrition program. Primary research responsibilities for this position will be to maintain an independent research program with the expectations to obtain externally funded grants, establish research collaborations with other faculty in the department and faculty in other departments as appropriate. The candidate should be able to provide leadership in the department, apply health-relevant, evidence-based theoretical frameworks in research, have strong quantitative or mixed methods research skills, and are experienced with multidisciplinary collaboration. Teaching expectations include undergraduate and graduate nutrition courses, with an emphasis in public health nutrition and/or community/intervention-based nutrition, behavioral theories and/or behavioral interventions, nutrition through the life cycle, or undergraduate or graduate level research methods. Responsibilities include advising undergraduate and graduate students, directing student research, with active participation in professional organizations.

Candidates must have earned their doctorate in health behavior; a public health, social, or behavioral science field; or nutrition. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of extramural funding and scholarly productivity, and successful mentoring for the associate or full professor rank, or a strong post-doctoral experience for the assistant professor rank. The successful candidate will: (a) conduct an independent research program that complements department and college research initiatives; (b) participate in related collaborative research programs; (c) provide teaching in the Department of Nutrition's educational programs; and (d) mentor MS/PhD students. UTK is Tennessee's flagship land grant university. UTK is a Carnegie Foundation Research (RI) University with highest research activity, has achieved a Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement, and educates approximately 29,000 students annually. Review begins April 15, 2020 and will continue until the position is filled.
