We prepare effective leaders for PreK–12 schools and colleges; researchers and policy scholars and educational policy leaders.

The mission of the ELPS Department is to prepare entry-level and executive-level administrators and faculty for schools and colleges, and to prepare policy scholars to serve in these organizations and in state, regional, and national policy agencies associated with the educational and human service enterprise. The graduate degree programs in the department are designed to enrich the knowledge, skills and values requisite to effective leadership in educational practice settings. The department views leaders as stewards and servants of organizations; designers of the social and cultural climate in which we do our work; teachers who facilitate human growth and development; change agents who continually examine the effectiveness of their organizations; and conceptual provocateurs who challenge ideas and assumptions on which practice and policy are built.

Evaluation is the systematic study of an organization or program's fidelity, merit, or worth, using a recognized set of national standards!

Students in our MS and PhD programs learn quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods evaluation designs, effective communication skills, cutting-edge reporting strategies, and hands-on application of evaluation procedures!

Most people only think about developing leadership when it is tied to a formal role. Our Leadership Studies Minor curriculum starts with the idea that leadership is an activity available to anyone at any time! The Leadership Studies course sequence is a 12-credit minor that helps students learn how to practice leadership activity!

This program is open to all students from all majors and aims to enhance the collegiate experience by preparing students for career and civic life beyond graduation!

Our master's of science in educational administration (EDAM) program is a 30 credit-hour program including 3 credit hours of internship credit and leads to a Tennessee Instructional Leadership License (ILL-B). The program is designed to align with the National Educational Leadership Preparation (NELP) Standards, the Tennessee Instructional Leadership Standards (TILS), and State Literacy Standards. At the conclusion of coursework, students will be required to take the School Leaders Licensure Assessment and score above the established cut-off score to be recommended for Instructional Leadership licensure!
