UTK Black Alumni Council

UTK Black Alumni Council The Black Alumni Council is established to serve the black alumni, the UT community, and to promote the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

The Black Alumni organization was created September 1, 1984, as a sub-organizational group of the UT National Alumni Association. The purpose of the organization was to encourage black alumni involvement in university affairs by:

- Participating in Alumni Association programs and activities
- Developing programs of interest to black alumni, faculty, staff and students
- Encouraging awareness of b

lack alumni, faculty, staff and student concerns
- Recruiting minority students
- Promoting greater financial participation by black alumni

All black graduates and former students of the university were automatically members of the associates. On November 1, 1985, the Black Alumni, led by Harold Archibald, established the Black Alumni Associates Endowment and Scholarship Fund. The fund was created to provide scholarships for deserving black students on the Knoxville campus. The fund exemplified the type of commitment maintained throughout the Associates structure. A thirty-five member board of directors represented the organization.

CCI is excited to welcome Professor Shani Daily to UT School of Information Sciences! Daily is one of eight outstanding scholars the university is welcoming this fall as part of UT’s preeminent hiring initiative and ongoing investment in research and innovation. A Nashville native, Daily returns to Tennessee with an interdisciplinary career focused on the intersection of technology, education, and human experience.

Her research explores human-centered artificial intelligence, affective computing, creative learning technologies, and education and workforce development. She is particularly interested in how technology and educational systems can create more pathways for students to persist and thrive in STEM.

Her academic journey includes degrees from Florida State University, Florida A&M University, and the MIT Media Lab, where she worked with influential researchers whose ideas about learning, creativity, and emotion continue to shape her work today.

At UT, Daily sees opportunities to collaborate across disciplines and with organizations including the AI Tennessee Initiative, UT Institute of Agriculture, Tickle College of Engineering, CEHHS, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and UT’s extension campuses.
