Congratulations to Dr. Brittany Grayless, clinical associate professor, on the successful defense of her PhD dissertation, “Personality-informed Communication Style and Psychological Outcomes Following Diagnostic Counseling for Tinnitus.” Dr. Grayless’ faculty mentor was Dr. Mark Hedrick, and her dissertation committee also included Drs. Steven Doettl, Ann Perreau, James Lewis, and Patrick Plyler. Dr. Perreau visited from Augustana College in Illinois, and Dr. Lewis joined virtually from Viterbo University in Wisconsin. This is an impressive accomplishment, Dr. Grayless!

ASP recently participated in the BeaumontKnoxWell Health and Community Fair at Beaumont Magnet Academy, an event sponsored by UT Medical and United Way of Greater Knoxville as part of their Community Schools Initiative. Allison Wegman and a group of MS-SLP students performed hearing screenings with individuals of all ages, often with the assistance of interpreters who were available that day. A special thanks to Liliana Burbano, Community Health Director at UT Medical, for coordinating our involvement. For anyone who is interested, the next event will be September 12 at Whittle Springs Elementary School. Call 865-305-5589 for more information.

AuD students, Yasmeen Khalighi, Kara Tully, and Sabrina Khan, recently presented at the American Academy of Audiology Annual Convention in San Antonio. Sabrina presented, “Usability and Accuracy of Fitting in AirPods Pro Hearing Features for Older Adults,” which was the culmination of her third year AuD Capstone Project with Drs. Urbanski, Hausladen, and P. Plyler as faculty mentors. Second year AuD students Yasmeen and Kara are shown here with one of their faculty mentors, Dr. Hasan Saleh. They presented, “Hearing Aid Technology Level and Music Classification,” a project with Drs. Hausladen, P. Plyler, and Elangovan as additional faculty mentors.

We are grateful to the David Lipscomb Hearing Conservation Fund for its invaluable support of the students’ travel. This opportunity provided them with a national platform to disseminate the findings of these impressive projects.

Tom Davidson Research Day

This year, we adopted a new approach by incorporating a morning session featuring various scholarly presentations and an afternoon dedicated to student research posters. Leigh Seaman, Tom Davidson’s daughter, extended a warm welcome to participants and kicked off the day of learning. We want to extend a special thanks to community partners who presented, including Dr. Jameson Mattingly from ENT Consultants of East Tennessee, Dr. Aimee Biddle from Knox County Schools, Dr. Cheyenne Boshears from Children’s ENT, and Dr. Lee Cottrell from Farragut ENT & Allergy. They joined ASP’s Dr. Steven Doettl, Dr. Hasan Saleh, and Jestina Bunch to provide lively and informative sessions. Kudos to the search committee for a successful event.
*Stay tuned for another post highlighting student presentations.

Hats off to Clinical Assistant Professor Jestina Bunch, who was recently selected as Employee of the Week by the UT Health Sciences Human Resources Office. A speech-language pathologist who has been with our department since 2018, Jestina specializes in serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as those with complex communication needs. Her nominator fittingly said that Jestina is “an outstanding clinical educator who brings passion and purpose to everything she does. She is deeply committed to student learning while also prioritizing the well-being of the children and families served through the speech and language clinic.”
Way to go, Jestina!
