WBIR-TV in Knoxville is celebrating its 70th year on the air. They are highlighting some of the earliest shows they featured at that time, and Dr. Bernard Silverstein’s “Stop! Look! and Listen!,” which began In October 1956, was one of its first. It’s yet another example how Dr. Bernie impacted the community in which he served and taught for so many years. We hope you enjoy the segment as much as we have!

WBIR-TV signed on in August of 1956. Two months later, a local Speech pathologist began a community program, "Stop! Look! And Listen!"

A Survey of Vestibular Testing by Audiologists

Researchers at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences are seeking licensed audiologists to participate in a brief survey examining current vestibular testing practices and clinical efficiency in audiology settings across the United States.
If you are a licensed audiologist who performs or is involved in vestibular assessment and testing, you are invited to complete this anonymous survey. Participation is voluntary, and the survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Your responses will help researchers better understand current clinical practices and identify opportunities to improve the efficiency of vestibular audiology.

Here’s a glimpse of yet another space that we are now in at the Cherokee Mills complex. Today, we welcomed over 100 undergraduate students into a newly-renovated large lecture hall, and everyone is grinning from ear-to-ear!

Not only is there ample instructional space for this large group, but there are also unique areas for relaxing in between classes. It is hard to believe the transformation that has taken place in this space over a six-week period since flooding forced us to exit parts of the Conference Center.

This particular group of students is the last to join us at Cherokee Mills. Our professors have been holding class in a variety of locations around campus, including a meeting space adjacent to the UT Creamery!

Fun fact: The lecture hall used to be a physical therapy treatment room!

Hip-Hip Hooray x 4!

The Silverstein First Year Clinician’s Award is announced each year around orientation. Sara White (AuD) and Delaney Stone (MS-SLP) were recognized as this year’s recipients, following in the footsteps of last year’s recipients, Emily Ivey (AuD) and Abby Hansen (MS-SLP). They were selected by the clinical faculty as the top performers in their clinical placements. The award is named in memory of Dr. Bernard Silverstein who was a longtime professor and pillar of the department.

When asked about their favorite clinical experiences so far, Sara talked about how much she enjoys fitting patients with their first hearing aids and then seeing them for a follow-up appointment a few weeks later. “It's so rewarding to see patient success - watching them meet their goals and feel more confident as they return to daily activities that they may have withdrawn from.” Delaney reflected on the individuals she served last year and said, “With each one, I learned more and more about being compassionate, patient, creative, and flexible. I was actually able to keep my very first patient for an extra semester, and she will always be so special to me. She taught me so much about how rewarding and joyful it can be to be an SLP!”

Emily continues on a busy path in her graduate program, having recently completed a full-time summer externship at Farragut ENT & Allergy in Knoxville. At the end of this academic year, she will return there for her 4th year externship. Abby is now an alumna of our program, having graduated in May. She is working full-time at Lenoir City Elementary School where she is surrounded by her favorite thing…little people!

Has anyone noticed a new energy in the air since the temperatures have dropped a little? We’re feeling it too! ASP is buzzing with activity. While we continue to be busy seeing patients in our 2nd floor spaces at the Conference Center, we have now transitioned many others to our temporary spaces in the Cherokee Mills complex. Part 2: In recent weeks, ASP faculty and students have hit the road for some outreach activities outside of the city. We returned to Faith-N-Friends Horse Sanctuary for speech-language services (and lots of smiles) at Reading with the Rescues. Additionally, we have begun a new year of educational audiology services at Grainger County Schools. We are thankful for these and other opportunities to connect directly with individuals in rural areas!

Part 1: Engaging with the community is consistently rewarding and continues to be a great way to foster civic-mindedness among our students. To that end, ASP recently went to Whittle Springs Middle School for the NorthKnoxWell event to perform hearing screenings and John T. O’Connor Senior Center to offer public education and hearing screenings. Everyone involved had a great time, and we were able to provide valuable information to a number of individuals. Thank you to these community partners for including us!

UT Gardens was a beautiful setting for this year’s Beginner’s Bash BBQ. Faculty, staff, Community Development Board members, several off-campus preceptors, and current students gathered to welcome our newcomers and kick-off the ‘26-‘27 academic year. UT Health Sciences Office of Student Success provided some great looking t-shirts, fun games, and the biggest hit of the evening - UT Creamery ice cream! Dr. Casenhiser thanked everyone for their patience and flexibility during the last few weeks as we’ve transitioned to some “new-to-us” locations and spaces. He also announced first year clinician awards, which we will highlight in an upcoming post. It was a fun evening!

As much of ASP’s program has been transitioning to Cherokee Mills, the move has been made easier due to the generosity of Haslam College of Business - UT, who has - in true One UT spirit - graciously offered some of its spaces for us to use. Our faculty, staff, and students have felt welcomed in their classroom, meeting rooms, and offices. Our students especially love the ping pong table in the atrium! To express our deep appreciation, we delivered cookies to some of their team.
