On September 30, 2026, Mark Massie, Chief Engineer and Founding Member of Antares Nuclear, presented at the UT Department of Nuclear Engineering Colloquium. Antares Nuclear is a startup company building transportable microreactors for mission-critical power. He led the nuclear design of Antares’s first reactor, Mark-0, which reached criticality just 11 months after design began.

Mark earned his BS from the UT Department of Nuclear Engineering and his master’s from MIT, worked at ORNL and TerraPower, and co-founded Transatomic Power. UT NE professors Suarez, Bogetic, and Maldonado were among the hosting faculty members for this visit. The photo included is at the Flexible Neutron Source Laboratory.

Representatives from the Brazilian National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) visited the UT Department of Nuclear Engineering on October 1, 2026. The delegation was led by Dr. Wilson Calvo, Director of Science and Research at CNEN. They were accompanied by ORNL leadership, including Dr. Tara Pandya and Ana Raffo Caiado.

They were hosted by UTK NE’s Dr. Brian Wirth (Department Head) and Ivan Maldonado (Associate Department Head). Discussions of interest included overviews of the various organizations (CNEN, UTK, ORNL), potential partnerships on education, research, and workforce development, as well as technical topics of interest on advanced reactors and deployment challenges.

Nuclear Engineering thanks Jared Greer, Bryan Klein, and the TVA Watts Bar team for hosting 20 nuclear engineering students for a tour of the simulator and site, along with a discussion of career opportunities! It was a great fall break visit.

The Nuclear Engineering Department thanks our for reaching out to encourage the future nuclear workforce to join the epicenter of new nuclear at this week's Appalachian Sessions event on campus! Approximately 1,500 middle and high-school-aged students from seven surrounding counties were introduced to nuclear engineering and learned about great opportunities in nuclear careers.
