Biomedical Engineering Professor Jindong Tan has been elected general chair of the 2029 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS).

The IEEE/RSJ IROS is one of the largest and most influential international conferences on robotics and AI. The 2029 conference will be held in Anaheim, California, with an expected attendance of about 10,000 researchers, industry leaders, and students from around the world.

As the director of festivals & project management at C3 Presents, Shelby Goodsell (BS/BME, ’18) often jokes that she is a “festival engineer." Though she may not be working in a field directly correlated to her degree in biomedical engineering, many of the analytical skills she acquired while studying at UT are used on a regular basis.

Zeanah Professor and Department of Biomedical Engineering Head Dacheng Ren finds some of his best ideas on the run—using marathon training as a space to think through life, philosophy, and science. He recently completed his first Boston Marathon with a personal-best 3:12, reflecting the same discipline and focus he brings to leadership and research.

Beyond running, Ren values hobbies that create breathing room outside of work—an approach he says supports work-life balance and even fuels creativity.

Two biomedical engineering senior design teams in the University of Tennessee Tickle College of Engineering partnered with the University of Tennessee College of Nursing to develop low-cost, reusable pediatric pneumothorax chest-tube trainers to help prepare future pediatric nurse practitioners.

Congratulations to Nafis Arefin and Demitria Poulos, who were both selected to attend prestigious national conferences!

Arefin submitted a research abstract to the Cardiovascular Implants and Durability Conference in Pacific Grove, California, where he was chosen as one of six finalists in the student competition.

Poulos was invited to the Rising Stars in Mechanical Engineering workshop at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a highly selective event for female graduate students and PhD holders pursuing careers in academia.
