Whether working at a pop-up healthcare clinic in Kenya or contributing to local organizations and clubs in Knoxville, Jiro Greenberg-Oster has spent his time on Rocky Top making a difference. And now, after graduating from the University of Tennessee College of Nursing this May, he’s ready to continue making a difference through his nursing career.

“As a nurse I get to make a living meeting new people, building relationships, and supporting recovery and perseverance. There is nothing more satisfying to me than helping others succeed,” said the Memphis, Tennessee, native.

While at UT, Greenberg-Oster got involved as a student ambassador and a member of the Nursing Simulation Team, helping enhance the college’s curriculum and learning experience for others. Beyond academics, he’s also found community through the Rocky Top BBQ, a barbecue club devoted to fund-raising for local charities, and the Sustainable Fashion Club, a student organization promoting secondhand shopping.

But Greenberg-Oster’s involvement didn’t just stop in Knoxville. Through the College of Nursing, he also had an opportunity to travel to rural Kenya to do clinical rotations with the WAKA School of Nursing.

“As nursing students, we spent most of our time in various hospitals and hosting a free pop-up clinic in Nyeri County. We immersed ourselves as locals and had life-changing experiences.”

After graduation, Greenberg-Oster will begin his RN career at Ascension Columbia St. Mary's Hospital in the Neuro ICU.
