Join Us for the First Lakota Leadership & Lifeways Series!

Oglala Lakota College Graduate Studies is excited to launch our Lakota Leadership & Lifeways Series this year with a special presentation by Dr. Craig Howe!

“Lakotan Societies as Models for Lakotan Governance”

Tuesday, October 13, 2026
5:30–7:00 PM (MST)
In Person: OLC LaCreek College Center and Virtually: Via Zoom

Dr. Howe, an Oglala Lakota scholar and founder of the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS), will explore how Lakotan societies provide meaningful models for leadership, governance, relationships, and collective responsibility.

This session invites participants to consider how Lakotan knowledge, values, and traditional ways of organizing communities can continue to inform leadership and decision-making today.

Our new Lakota Leadership & Lifeways Series is designed to bring together students, educators, community members, and leaders to learn from Indigenous scholars and knowledge holders while strengthening connections between Lakota knowledge, leadership, and contemporary community practices.

This event is open to everyone! Whether you are a student, educator, community leader, or simply interested in learning more, we welcome you to join us in person or virtually.

Please see the flyer for additional information. We hope to see you there!

🌙 Late Night Thoughts from OLC… Empty Tank Edition

Well Brave Hearts…

I usually sit down at night and have something rolling around in my head that I want to tell you.

Tonight?

I got nothing. 😂

My tank is EMPTY.

No inspirational speech.
No brilliant words of wisdom.
No random thought that somehow turns into a lecture about scholarships, homework, or asking your counselor for help. 😂

Just…

Thank goodness tomorrow is FRIDAY. 🙌🏽😂

And maybe that’s actually tonight’s thought.

Sometimes you’re just tired.

We’re getting closer to midterms. The semester is moving fast. Work is still work. Families still need us. There are meetings, assignments, deadlines, appointments, responsibilities, and about 47 other things happening at the same time.

Some days you can handle all of it like a champ.

Other days your brain says:

Nope. We’re done here. 😂

And that’s where I’m at tonight.

So if you’re feeling that way too, maybe neither one of us needs a motivational speech tonight.

Maybe we just need to finish what absolutely has to be finished, put the rest down, and try again tomorrow.

Because guess what?

You don’t have to be at 100% every single day to keep moving forward. ❤️

Tomorrow is Friday.

We have All Staff, and then we’ll finish Hope & Healing Week with Traditional Foods. I’m looking forward to ending the week together, learning, visiting, eating some good food, and just enjoying the afternoon.

Then I’m going to recharge this battery because right now…

🪫 WE ARE BLINKING RED. 😂😂

And if your battery is blinking red tonight too, Brave Hearts, I see you.

We’re almost there.

One more day.

Then breathe.

Goodnight, Brave Hearts. 🌙❤️

That’s all I got.

Literally. 😂

🌙 Late Night Thoughts from OLC… Halfway There

Well Brave Hearts…here we are again. ❤️

Midterms are right around the corner. 👀📚

I know some of you just read that and thought, “Already?!?” 😂

Yep. Already.

And we are also halfway through Hope & Healing Week.

Tomorrow we’re doing Junk Journaling, and I have never tried it before, so I’m actually pretty excited! 😂 I have no idea what mine is going to look like, but that’s kind of the point—come try something new with me.

Then Friday, after we all get back from our All Staff Meeting, we’ll finish the week with Traditional Foods. ❤️

I want you to remember why we’re doing this week in the first place.

It’s for YOU.

Take a little time for yourself.

Step outside your normal routine. Put the homework down for a little while. Get away from the screen. Sit with somebody. Laugh. Create something. Learn something. Try something you’ve never done before.

And reconnect with your culture.

Sometimes I think we forget that our ancestors didn’t learn culture from a PowerPoint or because somebody told them, “Okay, you have exactly one hour to learn this.” 😂

They learned through daily life.

By sitting together.

Watching.

Listening.

Doing.

Visiting.

Laughing.

Making things.

Preparing food.

Learning from the people around them.

There was knowledge in everyday life. ❤️

That’s the feeling I hope we can create a little bit of this week.

No pressure to be perfect. No test at the end. 😂 Just an opportunity to slow down, learn something, enjoy each other’s company, and reconnect.

Because next week?

Welllll…those midterms are still coming. 👀😂

But tonight, I want you to remember something:

You are halfway through the semester.

Look how far you’ve already come.

Maybe it hasn’t been perfect. Maybe you’ve struggled a little. Maybe life has LIFE-ed all over the place. 😂

But you’re still here.

Keep going.

Ask for help when you need it. Take care of yourself. Take a little time to breathe.

And then get back at it.

I believe in you, Brave Hearts. ❤️

You got this.

Now come Junk Journal with me tomorrow because apparently we’re about to find out together what we’re doing. 😂😂

Goodnight, Brave Hearts. 🌙❤️

Welcome to our September Data Spotlight: One of OLC's key enrollment indicators is retention of entering freshmen, the rate at which students who start college in a fall semester are still enrolled in the following fall. In Fall 2026, 65% of the students who started in Fall 2025 are still enrolled. This is the highest retention in recent years!
