In September, five teams from Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College, Navajo Technical University, United Tribes Technical College, and White Earth Tribal and Community College gathered at the University of Colorado Anschutz for the BUILD-NET AI Program.

Over the course of the program, these teams are exploring how AI can be used in health research, with an important focus on Tribal data sovereignty and what responsible use of AI looks like in Tribal communities. Each team will eventually develop a grant proposal to continue building this work on their own campus.
Congratulations to our BUILD-NET AI teams!

We are proud to announce that KBOCC’s Associate of Science in Nursing Program has earned accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)! 🎉

“This is an incredibly exciting moment for our Nursing Program, our students, and KBOCC,” said Paula Roth, KBOCC Nursing Department Chair. “Achieving ACEN accreditation represents years of hard work, planning, evaluation, and continuous improvement. Our faculty and staff have been deeply committed to building a nursing program that provides students with a high-quality education while preparing compassionate, knowledgeable, and culturally responsive nurses. I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished and grateful to everyone who helped us reach this milestone.”

The 73-credit Associate of Science in Nursing Program prepares graduates to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and enter the nursing profession. The program combines classroom instruction, laboratory learning, and clinical experiences with an emphasis on patient-centered, culturally sensitive, evidence-based, and holistic nursing care.

Today, on Orange Shirt Day, the KBOCC community came together to honor Indigenous children who were forced to attend residential schools, the Survivors of those schools, their families and communities, and the children who never returned home.

The orange shirt has become a symbol of remembrance and a reminder that every child deserves to be seen, valued, and protected.

Introducing RISE: KBOCC’s Strategic Plan 2030–31

Like a canoe traveling through connected waters, KBOCC moves forward through our relationships with one another, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, the lands and waters that sustain us, and the communities we serve.

KBOCC is excited to introduce RISE: Strategic Plan 2030–31—a shared journey forward, grounded in our mission and Anishinaabe identity.

RISE reflects the voices of learners, alumni, employees, the Board of Regents, Tribal and community partners, Elders and knowledge holders, and others who care about KBOCC. These voices affirmed the strengths that ground us: cultural connection, belonging and support, affordability, committed people, and strong connections to community. They also called on KBOCC to continue reducing barriers to education, strengthening relationships, stewarding resources, and remaining responsive to changing learner and community needs.

Four guiding directions run throughout the plan:

* Relationships remind us that learning, trust, and community well-being are built together.
* Innovation calls us to respond creatively and thoughtfully to changing needs while remaining grounded in our mission.
* Stewardship reflects our responsibility to care for people, knowledge, lands, waters, systems, and resources across generations.
* Empowered Learners remain at the center of our work, supported in achieving goals that contribute to themselves, their communities, and future generations.

The plan’s four strategic priorities identify where KBOCC will focus its shared effort through 2030–31. Our goals describe what we intend to make meaningfully different, while progress signposts and annual review will help us understand what is changing, what we are learning, and where we need to adjust.

Our vision is our far shore—the future toward which we travel. RISE is how we paddle together to get there. The full RISE Strategic Plan 2030–31 is available here:https://www.kbocc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/KBOCC_RISE_Strategic_Plan_2026-2031.pdf

RISE: Paddling together, growing with intention, and moving toward the horizon.

High school students who earn dual credit through KBOCC and the Copper Country ISD recently joined the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Baraga County Chamber of Commerce for visits to Massie Manufacturing and Peninsula Powder Coating.

The students, who are enrolled in the Business/Entrepreneurship CTE course, represent the L’Anse and Baraga school district and the Calumet homeschool district. The visits provided participants with a firsthand look at local
manufacturing operations and workforce opportunities, while business leaders shared insights into the factors contributing to the success of their companies.

"This was a valuable experience for our students, allowing them to see modern manufacturing in action while learning about career opportunities and the qualities that contribute to business success in our region," said Rhonda Nachtigall, KBOCC Business Administration Faculty Chair and instructor for the Business/Entrepreneurship CTE course.

The Business/Entrepreneurship CTE Program is designed to give the students an in-depth look at the skills, knowledge and competencies necessary to be an effective entrepreneur.
