UW-La Crosse Geography and Environmental Science

The Department of Geography and Environmental Science develops the necessary skills to address pressing environmental and societal issues including land-use change, natural resource management, climate change, natural hazards and disaster management, population growth and migration, and globalization. Our students graduate with an understanding of spatial connectivity in the natural and built envi

ronment, and recognize how past and present conditions on Earth guide decisions that will influence future generations of people and their interactions with natural systems. Geographical and environmental awareness are promoted through classroom activities, research projects, international travel, and outreach programs. Southwest Wisconsin’s Driftless Area landscape provides Geography and Environmental Science students hands-on learning experiences in the beautiful blufflands, wetlands, and river systems located adjacent to campus.

We would like to say a big “Thank you” to the Geography and Environmental Science Club (GESC), multiple faculty members from departments across campus, and Murphy Library for coming together to create an amazing experience at “Climate and Coffee” last week. Not only did John Kelly and Rupsa Bhowmick from our department participate, but we want to extend special thanks to Joe Spurlock (Education), Dean Vesperman (History), Jeremy Arney (Political Science), Alysa Remsburg (Sustainability and Environmental Studies), Katy Kortenkamp (Psychology) and Taylor Hamblin (History). An impressive example of cooperation across campus towards a common goal.
