Exciting news! For the second year in a row, our Viterbo University students made the news in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa! 📰🇿🇦

As part of their faculty-led study abroad program, the students walked the historic streets that shaped South Africa’s liberation movement, visiting landmarks like City Hall and the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. They also took part in community service projects with Siyabonga: Helping Hands for Africa, supporting orphaned children and helping equip youth with computer skills and educational opportunities. Their work contributes to ongoing efforts to revitalize Pietermaritzburg through heritage tourism and community development, fostering meaningful connections between South Africa and the United States.

Study Abroad Champion Spotlight: Emma Schoen, Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry

Each year, Emma has embraced the incredible opportunity to study abroad and grow both personally and academically. Here is what Emma shared with us about her journey:

Study abroad locations & dates:
1. Zamora, Spain (May - June 2023)
2. Costa Rica (January 2025)
3. South Africa (currently studying)

✨ Favorite activities abroad:
“In Spain, my favorite activities were visiting El Prado and Sophia Reina museums in Madrid, and enjoying the company of locals while sharing café con leche en la Plaza Mayor. In Costa Rica, my favorite activity was zip lining!”

💡 What I learned about myself:
“I learned that our world is truly a beautiful place, not only because of the wonders of nature, but also the people. Whether I was walking along the streets in Spain, cruising along the Rio Duero in Portugal, or zip lining through Costa Rica, I was in such awe of how all God’s creations are so spectacular.”

💫 Emma’s message to the world:
“I deeply encourage every college student to study abroad at least once. Studying abroad changed my perspective by broadening how I see the world and making me more open-minded. I felt fully immersed in the culture, developed a deep appreciation for it, and gained meaningful growth in my ability to understand and use the language.”

Meet Haylee Campbell✨

🇧🇿 Haylee is a graduating senior nursing major who completed her capstone in Belize!

🖼️Favorite Moment
“My favorite part of Belize was waking up on the first day and brushing my teeth at the outside sinks while the kudamundi wandered next to me. I felt truly immersed in the jungle nature despite being an ‘outdoorsy’ person.”

🌿Haylee’s Experience
“I learned a lot about myself during my experience abroad along with many different perspectives. I really learned how to live life on Belizean time by being flexible and adaptable to schedule changes and weather conditions. When it rains it POURS and there’s a large emphasis on -ish as a time concept”

💬Haylee’s Message
“Don’t be afraid to not go with the crowd. Do what you want to do and what makes you happy. On our day in Caye Caulker I went out fishing because it is what I wanted to do and despite the rain I came back with lots of fish for all us girls to share and try at our final dinner.”

If you want to travel like Haylee, the Belize trip will take place in April 2027

🚨Applications are due October 1st, DM us or email us at [email protected]

Meet Sydney Bailie ✨

🩺Sydney is a senior nursing major who studied abroad in Belize.

🏆Sydney’s Lesson
“I am brave and that it is important to take risks because the reward is worth it.”

📢Sydney’s Advice
“Go out and meet as many people that you can from many different places. You will find that we as people are not all that different, no matter where you are from . It gives you a much greater sense of empathy and understanding of the world. This is especially important at a time where everything is so divided.”
