The Mathematics and Statistics Department consists of over 30 teacher-scholars who are dedicated to excellence in undergraduate education. In addition to our teaching program, department members are engaged in a variety of scholarship, research, and professional service activities, including traditional research-scholarship, support for undergraduate mathematics research programs, participation in

national mathematics organizations, and outreach in middle/high school mathematics. Research interests within the department include algebra, fluid dynamics, graph theory, harmonic analysis, mathematical biology, mathematics education, numerical analysis, operator theory, and statistics. As one of the traditional academic disciplines, mathematics is an integral part of the liberal arts education and is the foundation for many areas of study. In filling many roles at UW-La Crosse the Mathematics Department serves a diverse group of students; we nurture all arts students, give students a solid foundation from which to study both the natural and social sciences, provide the tools needed by students in professional programs, and cultivate mathematics majors. We strive to prepare our majors and minors for careers in teaching, business, industry, government, and graduate study. Department members regard mathematics as an interesting and lively subject, and an accessible major or minor for any student. Mathematics has both an aesthetic and a practical appeal; the enjoyment of problem solving, abstract thinking, and structural beauty draws many to mathematics, while the challenge and satisfaction of using mathematics to solve real-world problems provides an equally strong appeal. If you enjoy mathematics and want to learn more, we invite you to come study with us. This page may not be monitored daily.

The UW-La Crosse Mathematics and Statistics department represented at the WMC conference this week. Dr. Matthew Chedister, Dr. Josh Hertel, Dr. Jennifer Kosiak, Dr. Jenni McCool, Dr. Maggie Lee McHugh, and Dr. Crystal Marie Vandermeuse Vesperman all presented, and an awesome group of students served as pages (and won the pi run!)

A delegation of faculty from Mathematics and Statistics went to attend the Most Accessible Awards, a wonderful event put on by DREAM (Disability Rights, Education, Activism, and Mentoring).

Our own Dr. Kelly O'Connor and Dr. Benjamin Anderson were individual faculty nominees, and our department was a department nominee. It was inspiring to celebrate and thank all the faculty, staff members, and departments who are working to make the UWL experience accessible for our students!

And last, congratulations to the Art Department for the well-deserved recognition!

CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Jenn Kosiak, faculty in math education, for winning this prestigious award! We are SO proud of you, Dr. Kosiak!

More about the award:

The MAA Wisconsin Section Carol Crawford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (the "Crawford Award") was established in 1991. It stands as a concrete statement that mathematicians at the colleges and universities in Wisconsin place high importance on teaching. The Wisconsin Section is proud of its growing list of award recipients. These members of the mathematical community who have been recognized for their excellent work as teachers represent the commitment to teaching that exists among mathematicians throughout the state.

The Crawford Award, previously the Wisconsin Section Distinguished Teaching Award, was renamed in 2025 to honor Dr. Carol Crawford of the U.S. Naval Academy, as her generous bequest supports this award being given yearly to one faculty member in each of the 29 sections of the MAA.
