The ceremonial donning of the white coat at UC San Diego School of Medicine marks the beginning of a new chapter. 🥼

As the 140 new medical students received their white coats on August 27, the ceremony became a celebration of the people, experiences and aspirations that brought each student to medicine. For many students, that inspiration began close to home—with family. 💙

A new interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Business Data Science – one of the first such programs in the nation and the first in the University of California system – will empower students to turn data into strategic business decisions.

The program aims to produce skilled professionals capable of making strategic business decisions that capitalize on advances in cutting-edge data science and artificial intelligence. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently projected Data Scientist to be the fourth-fastest growing occupation between 2024 and 2034.

UC San Diego’s fiscal year 2026 awards totaled nearly $1.8 billion, including grants from federal, state, industry, non-profits and philanthropic research gifts. Though the tally represents one of the university’s highest sponsored research totals to date, it reflects both momentum and caution in the research funding landscape.

Federal sources made up 62% of total FY26 award funding, a 19% increase over the previous year.

At the same time, the number of new awards declined to 1,746. This is down from 1,925 in FY25.

Together, those figures point to a mixed but encouraging picture.

Jacobs School of Engineering alumna Deniz Burnham is headed for the Space Station 🚀

Burnham, who earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from UC San Diego before being selected as a NASA astronaut in 2021, will embark on her first mission to the International Space Station, serving as an Expedition 76 flight engineer.

Her launch is targeted for March 2027. During her expedition, Burnham will conduct scientific investigations and technology demonstrations to help prepare humans for future exploration missions to the Moon and Mars and to benefit people on Earth.

Burnham joins a storied group of three other UC San Diego alumni (Jessica Meir, Kate Rubins and Megan McArthur) to complete training and serve in NASA’s astronaut corps. The first American woman to fly in space, Sally Ride, became a professor at UC San Diego after retiring from NASA.

Congrats, Deniz, on your selection as Expedition 76 flight engineer!
