This Pride Month we’re shining the spotlight on Admissions and Recruitment Specialist Christine Cartlidge (she/her)!

Cartlidge shared what Pride Month means to her, why celebrating the month matters and more:

🏳️‍🌈What does Pride Month mean to you?
I was introduced to the LGBTQIA+ community through my mother, who came out when I was nine. One of my earliest memories was experiencing the San Diego Pride parade for the first time. As a child, I remember feeling vibrant, joyful, celebratory and full of energy. As I grew older, I began to understand the deeper meaning behind Pride Month and why those celebrations existed in the first place. What once felt simply festive became something far more meaningful: a reminder of the importance of visibility, acceptance, and the right for people to live openly and authentically.

🎉How do you celebrate Pride Month?
For me, celebrating Pride has always been about supporting and appreciating the people and community who have shown me that same support and appreciation since childhood. I think celebration exists in everyday actions: treating people with respect, creating inclusive environments, listening with empathy and helping others feel comfortable being themselves not just during Pride Month, but year-round.

💙 Why is it important to celebrate Pride Month?
I think belonging, connection, and representation are incredibly important, and Pride Month helps create space for people to feel seen, accepted and included for who they are. It’s also important because it recognizes the history, struggles, resilience and progress of the LGBTQIA+ community while reminding us that there is always more we can do to continue building inclusive and supportive communities.

🌈 What advice do you have for someone learning how to be a better ally?
Being an ally doesn’t mean having all the right answers – it means being willing to listen, learn, speak up when it matters and support others consistently. I think one of the most important things is approaching people and experiences with empathy rather than assumptions. Lead with respect, stay open to growth and understand that allyship is often reflected in everyday actions and conversations.

💡What is one thing you want people to remember during Pride Month?
Everyone deserves to feel accepted, respected and safe being who they are. When LGBTQIA+ individuals are able to live openly and authentically without fear of judgment or exclusion, it strengthens the fabric of entire communities. Pride is a reminder that inclusion doesn’t just benefit one group; it benefits everyone by creating a more compassionate, connected and humane society for all.

Meet our newest graduates, twins Dima Kamal, PharmD, and Mina Kamal, PharmD!

From dreaming about UC San Diego while living in Dubai to earning their PharmD degrees together, Dima and Mina Kamal have been side by side every step of their journeys. Now they're embarking on careers in community pharmacy, bringing compassionate, accessible care to our community.

✨ What excites you most about this step in your careers?
We are excited to start our careers in community pharmacy, a path we knew we wanted to pursue from the beginning of pharmacy school. We were drawn to this area because it allows us to connect with patients, provide accessible healthcare, and make a meaningful difference in our community every day.

💊 Advice for future pharmacists?
Pharmacy school is challenging, and there will be times when it feels overwhelming or even impossible, but trust yourself and keep going. The hard work, long nights, and sacrifices are worth it, and one day you’ll look back and be amazed at how far you’ve come.

💙 Why UC San Diego for pharmacy school?
UC San Diego has been our dream school since we were living in Dubai, so graduating from this program is truly a full-circle moment. The exceptional education and dedicated faculty provided us with the knowledge, mentorship, and support that shaped us into the pharmacists we are today.

Congratulations, Dima and Mina! We can’t wait to see the impact you both will make in our community!

Meet one of our newest graduates, Von Phan, PharmD, PhD!

Driven by a lifelong curiosity about how the human body works, Von is now headed to UCSF for a fellowship where he’ll contribute to cutting-edge research with the potential to directly impact patients’ lives.

✨ What excites you most about your next role?
The opportunity to be part of cutting-edge scientific research with the intent to contribute to knowledge and advance science. I’m especially excited by how tangible the outcomes can be in clinical pharmacology, where the work can have a direct and measurable impact on patients.

💊 Which course, rotation, research project or teacher left the strongest impression on you and why?

My thesis advisor, Vivian Hook, completely changed the way I think and approach problems, and my co-advisor, Conor Caffrey, constantly pushed me to become better.

But if I had to pick the professor who left the strongest impression on me, it would probably be Anthony O’Donoghue. He has a way of making people feel genuinely welcomed and valued. I was never directly his grad student in lab, but he supported me in a way that honestly made it feel like I was. Whenever there’s a mixer or department event and I introduce people to him, I always joke that when I grow up, I want to be just like him.

💙 Why pursue a PharmD/PhD?
The PharmD/PhD program offers a uniquely broad perspective. It gives you the opportunity to explore medications at every stage, from compound discovery all the way through to patient administration, and everything in between.

If you’re interested in understanding science experimentally while also seeing how that science exists beyond the bench, I would recommend the program. The time commitment is significant, but in the context of a lifetime for an entire career, what’s a few extra years?

Congratulations, Von — we can’t wait to see what you will discover next!

Meet new grad Neke Konig, PharmD!

After discovering her passion is fast-paced acute care medicine, Neke is headed to Denver Health Medical Center for her PGY-1 residency!

✨What excites you most about your next role?
Gaining further experience in the acute care setting and strengthen my clinical pharmacy skills that will set me up for a PGY-2 pharmacy residency in emergency medicine.

I am also so excited to explore Denver! My wife is originally from Colorado, so I have been to Denver many times, but now I am excited to explore it as a resident.

💊Advice for future pharmacists?
Always make the most of each presented opportunity or learning experience. There are times you might take courses or experiences that aren’t in your area of interest, but there is ALWAYS something to learn to contribute to your growth!

💙Why UC San Diego?
The program offers so many opportunities to cater your experience to your interests through research opportunities, involvement in extracurricular organizations and elective courses. This approach is what allowed me to try a lot of different experiences and realize that emergency medicine is what I want to pursue!

Congratulations, Neke — we can’t wait to see all that you accomplish in this next chapter of your pharmacy career!

We're kicking off our countdown to Commencement with our fourth-year research poster presentations!

Our soon-to-be graduates presented their findings from their required research project to faculty, mentors and peers.

Highlights of research topics include:

➡️ Evaluating the use of AI in pharmacy and drug development
💊 Studying the tolerability of different drugs
🥼 Evaluating the effectiveness of pharmacy practice models, including student-run immunization clinics
🌎 Studying the impact of climate change on the health of older adults

As part of our curriculum — designed to train future leaders in health care —each of our students are required to complete a research project by graduation. The projects are completed in partnership with a faculty advisor or outside mentor, who provides guidance and support throughout the experience.

Thanks to all of our students and mentors for their excellent work! Looking forward to celebrating all of your accomplishments at Commencement this Saturday.
