🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Wilma Franco '17, University of La Verne Doctorate in Organizational Leadership alumna, on her recent appointment to the Los Angeles County Ethics Commission by Supervisor Hilda Solis!

Dr. Franco is a nonprofit and community leader with more than 20 years of experience advancing community development, civic engagement, and regional collaboration. As Executive Director of the Southeast Los Angeles (SELA) Collaborative, she has dedicated her career to strengthening communities and expanding community voice in the systems and decisions that impact them.

Reflecting on this new opportunity, Dr. Franco shared:
“This appointment is both an incredible honor and a responsibility I take very seriously. My experience at the University of La Verne challenged me to think more deeply about leadership, service, and the impact we can have when we bring our education back into our communities.”

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Franco ’17 as she brings her experience, scholarship, and commitment to service to this important role. Her leadership reflects the impact our alumni continue to make in their communities and beyond.

We’re excited to share Dr. Michael Vallejo’s recent appearance on The Your Story Matters Podcast, hosted by LFCE alumna Renae Bryant, Ed.D. ’17.

Dr. Vallejo serves as Director of the LFCE Collaborative Center and Assistant Professor of Inclusive Education at the LaFetra College of Education. With more than 22 years of experience in education, Dr. Vallejo has served in roles spanning preschool, K-12 special education, administration, teacher leadership, and higher education. Throughout his career, he has remained deeply committed to preparing and supporting educators who see, value, and understand the students they serve.

In this episode, Dr. Vallejo reflects on his own experiences as a K-12 student and shares why he is passionate about helping current and future teachers know their scholars by name, asset, and story. He also discusses what that approach looks like in practice, the importance of building meaningful relationships with students, and new opportunities for educators to expand their credentials in accelerated and manageable ways.

What a wonderful way to kick off planning for our 20th Annual Family Learning Conference! 🎉

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our Family Learning Conference Planning Kick-Off Meeting and helped us begin shaping this milestone year.

We were grateful to bring together educators, families, community members, and local partners to share ideas, expertise, and enthusiasm for supporting children and families.

For nearly 20 years, the Family Learning Conference has brought schools, families, community organizations, and the University of La Verne together to create welcoming, engaging, and accessible learning experiences for families at no cost.

The energy and collaboration at our kick-off meeting reminded us of what makes this conference so special: people coming together with a shared commitment to families, learning, and community.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the conversation. We are excited for what is ahead and look forward to working together as we prepare to celebrate the 20th Annual Family Learning Conference in 2027! 🧡💚

he LaFetra College of Education is proud to partner with YWCA San Gabriel Valley and Pacific Clinics for the second annual Breaking Barriers Youth Mental Health Conference, taking place at the University of La Verne on Saturday, September 26.

This year’s theme, “Intergenerational Voices,” will bring together youth, parents, educators, mental health professionals, and community leaders for a day centered on connection, understanding, and support across generations.

Through keynote speakers, interactive workshops, meaningful conversations, and community resources, participants will explore practical ways to strengthen resilience, build healthy relationships, and create environments where young people feel supported and empowered to thrive.

We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with our community partners on this important work and invite our LFCE and University of La Verne communities to join us.
