University of La Verne Speech Communication Department All alumni, majors, minors, faculty and staff of the department since its founding in 2000. Both teams are open to students of all majors and colleges.

The departmental curriculum examines communication theory, encourages practice and improvement of communication skills in a variety of contexts, and explores communication from a multicultural perspective. The department sponsors the La Verne Slam Poetry Team that competes nationally as well as the La Verne Debate Team, which competes nationally and internationally.
