Saint Martin's University Provost Council retreat brought together academic deans, directors, and faculty presidents to reflect on the purpose and practice of leadership at Saint Martin’s University. The retreat began with prayer and a discussion of why we lead, emphasizing leadership philosophy, shared purpose, and how we will lead together. The sessions focused on prioritizing the important rather than simply responding to the urgent, managing time and attention effectively, and establishing dignity as a foundation for our rules of engagement. The retreat concluded with the development of a leadership covenant for the coming year, translating our shared values into specific team behaviors and commitments, along with individual commitments, gratitude, and closing reflections. Provost Dr. Clavere articulated his leadership philosophy as a commitment to inspire, empower, and support others in their pursuit of wisdom, goodness, and truth, grounded in respect for the dignity of every person and the Benedictine principles of deep listening, hospitality, community building, stewardship, and service to the common good.

Master of Engineering Management candidate Jackie Madhava successfully presented her master’s thesis, “Bias by Design? Addressing Bias and Enhancing Transparency for a Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence,” on August 6. The thesis committee was chaired by Prof. Leslie Washko, with Dr. Chung-Shing Lee and Dr. Jae Chung serving as committee members. In her research, Jackie argues that bias in artificial intelligence is not simply a technical flaw but a systemic issue embedded in data, algorithms, and organizational practices. Using a qualitative literature review, she examined the sources and impacts of AI bias across multiple domains and evaluated technical, organizational, and regulatory strategies to address it, including frameworks such as the GDPR and the proposed EU AI Act. Her findings highlight the importance of a “Fairness-by-Design” approach that integrates bias audits, explainable AI (XAI), cross-disciplinary oversight, and strong governance throughout the AI lifecycle. The thesis concludes that transparency and fairness must be treated as core engineering principles to ensure AI systems are trustworthy, equitable, and beneficial to society.
