East L.A.’s CASA 0101 Theater presents Soul Sacrifice, written by BA and MFA in Creative Writing alum Consuelo G. Flores and directed by Kenneth Castillo. Set against the backdrop of Vietnam and the Chicano Movement, the play covers the weight of war, activism, grief, and the resilience of family. The show opened at the end of May and will run until June 21.

MFA Alum Niki Herd was a featured guest alongside poet Victoria Chang on "Meet Me There,” a monthly intergenerational poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction experience curated by trans/genderqueer poet Samuel Ace.

Herd is the author of two poetry collections, The Stuff of Hollywood (2024) and The Language of Shedding Skin (2011), and the chapbook ____ , don’t you weep (2022). With Meg Day, she co-edited Laura Hershey: On the Life & Work of an American Master (2019), named one of the year’s “hidden gems” by Ms. Magazine. A four-time Pushcart Prize nominee, Herd’s poetry, essays, and criticism, appear in or are forthcoming from The Adroit, Poetry Daily, Pleiades, Action, Spectacle, New England Review, the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Literature, Copper Nickel, the Academy of American Poets (Poem-a-Day), Lit Hub, The Rumpus, Obsidian, and Tupelo Quarterly, among other journals.

In 2020, we interviewed Joshua Reitzenstein, a graduate of the MA in Education program, discussing his experience at Antioch University, how he implements mindfulness into the classroom, and his passion for coaching.

After the interview, Joshua was reassigned to a Counseling Enriched classroom for students who qualify for special education with the label of Emotional Disturbance. No matter his role, Joshua has strived to bring restorative justice, emotional intelligence, and nature into educational environments.

His advice to future educators? “Never stop advocating for your students, even if that requires a whole new school system.”

For the first time in history, on June 8, the MFA in Creative Writing program is hosting a film festival of alum films as part of their residency. The six films in the lineup revolve around social justice across multiple genres, including horror, romantic comedy, animation, and drama. The festival will be held both on the Los Angeles campus and online.
