A big thank you to everyone who visited the BC Library and participated in our Banned Books Week activities! 📖

Whether you tried blackout poetry, took a chance on a blind date with a banned book, completed the scavenger hunt, matched shredded book covers, or explored our digital collection, we’re so glad you joined us!

We loved seeing everyone get involved, try something new, and join the conversation about the freedom to read. ❤

We’ve reached the top of our countdown! Coming in at #1, with 36 challenges, is…

📖 Sold by Patricia McCormick

💔 This powerful novel tells the story of Lakshmi, a young girl from Nepal who becomes a victim of human trafficking. Told through short, poetic passages, the book sheds light on the harsh realities of s*xual exploitation and the fight for survival.

⚠️ Sold was targeted for its realistic and graphic depiction of s*xual violence and child s*x trafficking.

💡 Why does this book matter? Difficult stories can be uncomfortable to read, but they can also raise awareness about real-world issues, encourage empathy, and open the door to important conversations.

📚 And that wraps up our countdown! From #8 to #1, these books remind us that the freedom to read means having access to stories that challenge us, introduce new perspectives, and encourage meaningful conversations.

💬 What do you think? Should challenging topics be a reason to remove a book, or can these stories help readers better understand the world around them? Share your thoughts in the comments!
